Coach Otz knows shooters and scorers

Des Moines Register Article:

We knew T.J. Otzelberger could recruit. As an assistant, he helped lure some of the finest men’s basketball talent Iowa State has seen. Georges Niang, Abdel Nader, Matt Thomas, and Naz Mitrou-Long. Wesley Johnson played while Otzelberger was an assistant. And Craig Brackins, too.

Don’t forget Diante Garrett, Scott Christopherson, Mike Taylor and Melvin Ejim. And if you need more, there’s Justin Hamilton, Chris Allen, Will Clyburn and Tyrus McGee.

Among others.

We Will and what it costs it get a shooter to look at us

Just listened to a pod on CF with Blum talking about out NLI. What continues to shake me is our program (writ large) is openly discussing the cost to get a shooter in the portal to take a call from ISU.

Caveat RIGHT here - he is doing the lords work (I'd call it the DARK lord's work but...) and everyone else is already ahead of us (NOT because of him but because of us).

Blum (hope he pops over here to clarify my comments) said it's basically menu pricing for levels of players and for a shooter in the portal will cost us 6 figures just to get a look from those caliber of players.

What struck me is Blum said we will NEVER pay for players, but I'm unable to reconcile the current situation with that statement again referring to my caveat. I believe his statement is we won't pay a player to COME to ISU, but if a player COMES to ISU, we will pay him. I was a CPA for years and that reconciliation doesn't make sense.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I really want children - sorry different forum - I really want a top flight program but can't fathom the additional complexities TJ has to go through JUST to give us a look...

I'm old and once again understanding how programs like ours are at best in the wind hoping for a charitable puff from the winds of money.

Coaching with more and coaching with less results.

In a moment of clarity as I look at some scores, I definitely appreciate what the ISU staff has done over the last 2 years after taking over a 2 win team.

I look at the the Sweet 16 run last year and this year’s 5th place Big 12 finish with a 6 seed in the Tourney. All with a tag tag group of players brought together to mesh and play as a team.

Then I look at Arkansas who beat Kansas but was only deemed worthy of an 8 seed, despite having 2 projected lottery picks and 2 more projected draft picks. So basically more of a future NBA roster under-coached to an underachieving regular season than a shocking 8 over 1 seed upset.

The Pitt game was beyond hard to watch, however TJ and crew have greatly exceeded expectations the first two years with less talent than his competition in conference.

I’d rather have gone through that than what Purdue or Arizona just had happen to them.

TJ is far ahead of expectations from the day he was hired to unf*ck Prohm’s mess.
Far ahead and with the best recruiting class in our history coming in.

And he’s not going to Chicago or an off campus apartment party in Columbia.

So we’re in a great place with TJ.

Quotes from T.J. Today.......

Per Randy Pete:
Some quotes from TJ in hotel lobby this morning, as team departed for the airport:
On Tamin's off-season: He's going to get in the gym, continue to work on shooting the ball from the perimeter. The next step for him is confidence in that shot.
On incoming transfers: We anticipate probably room for a transfer or two, but at this point, but we don't exactly know how (player meetings) shake out.
Random quotes: The foundation for our program is in place. We're going to continue to be very selective of who we bring in.
On Jeremiah Williams: IF he's back towards the end of the summer or early fall, that will help things for sure.
..,................................................................................... Not a surprise that Tamin needs to work on his shooting. He needs to be a complete all around point guard for us. Sounds like Jeremiah Williams MAY be entering the portal and looking for more playing time. I hope he stays. Surprised that T.J. is looking for only one or two in the portal. Thought we might be looking for more. Maybe we will if Williams leaves.....

Thoughts

1. That was a sh*tburger.

2.Pick any five southern Iowa Farmers.
They could shoot with greater accuracy than our guys.

3. Pitt used the extra day more than Play in teams usually get well.
Not that it was important in the end.

4. We CAN NOT function in the presence of HEIGHT.
Happened every time we ran into it.

5.Which means Big guys are critical.
Big meaning 6-11 and above.
Athletic and somewhat nasty.
Find somebody.
The wait for Rock is too long.

6. The ride was fun at times.
But I'm glad it is over.
We ended up with a team that was a nightmare to Baylor and no one else.

7. That might have been the worst basketball game I ever watched.
