JAX

Sorry to see that JAX in Ames is closing. I had a condo in Ames not far from JAX, but I never knew they existed. I had moved to the campustown town area when, maybe a decade after having a place in Ames, I discovered this awesome store. Two separate buildings were just packed full of sports-related stuff of all kinds. Well, I don't recall them selling golf clubs, but I could be wrong on that.

No long ago they were entertaining a move, but that must have fell through. I imagine overhead costs couldn't come close to their current location. Store traffic would have surely increased in a more visible location, but maybe not sales. I suppose a good percentage of traffic at their current store are1 people knowing what they want and not just browsing.

It finally happened to me, hawked

I'll admit I've never really been of a fan of these types of posts because they always seemed to have a Penthouse Letters sort of feel to them but today I got to experience my first nonconsensual hawkeye asshat encounter.

I went for a bike ride around town with my two boys and the bike trail winds around behind several local restaurants. As we passed by one I noticed a group of 4 middle-aged guys decked out in hawkeye gear sitting on the patio. We passed by with zero interaction and I'll note that I was not wearing anything Cyclone related. On our way back as we pass by the patio again here comes a handful of french fries thrown by one of hawkeye douchebags at my kids and I. They all missed and scattered onto the bike trail. I was stunned and blurted out "you throw like a hawkeye!" before I was out of sight down the trail. What kind of grown man just throws food at a dad and his kids on the bike trail for no reason? Had the boys not been there I probably would have turned around and had some more choice words.

I now have something in common with Biden

We both are dealing with prostate cancer. Fortunately for me, mine was detected well before it metastasized. In six months back in 2023, my PSA jumped from 4.6 to 7.9. This lead to a robot-assisted prostatectomy in April 2024. This got rid of most of it, though one of 13 lymph nodes taken for test also had it. Continued monitoring of my PSA indicated there was still some there. Starting in Feb this year, I underwent focused radiation treatment 5 days a week for eight weeks. This is being supplemented by anti-testosterone shots every six months for two years. I’m feeling fine with the only being hot flashes several times a day. I now have an little idea of one symptom women deal with in menopause😉

At his age and with his mental deterioration, I expect Biden’s treatment will skip the prostatectomy. It sounds like they will go straight to the anti-testosterone shots. Prostate cancer feeds on testosterone so the shots work to slow it down and extend a patient’s life span. I’ll be interested to see if they do radiation treatments. If they do, it may take a stronger version than I had because it reached his bones.

Whatever the treatments, I pray for the best results for him.

Big XII Track and Field Championships

I know we are a minority here who is interested, but we did pretty well in the Big XII T&F Championships. The men finished 4th (out of 16) and the Women finished 5th. The men and women both scored more that half of our points in mid-distance (400-Mile.) (OK 400 isn't technically, a mid distance today) TT won both men's and women's titles.

FOOTBALL Former Cyclone player passes away

Tragic news I heard about this afternoon. Charlie Rogers, a WR for a couple seasons under Paul Rhoads, passed away while running a half-marathon in New York City. He came to ISU from Iowa City West before transferring to a JUCO and on to Minnesota to finish up.

I happened to hear the news from a former Cyclone football player from the CPR era that has become a good friend of the family and was at my son’s graduation party today.

Democratic party has no future without Illegals.

This might explain why the Democratic party absolutely needs illegals here:

If we deport 20M illegals, this would be the equivalent of about 25 house seats in congress. Each House seat is represents 750K people, and it is based upon the total census including illegals. Most of these house seats would be in blue areas of the country, and this would mean a loss to the democratic party of 25 seats. That would leave them in the minority for decades possibly.

They also need to convert these illegals into voters at some point, because they are looking at an electoral college getting very red in 2030 and 2040, and it could be far worse if we deport all the illegals. THey have no future in elections without the illegals becoming voters.

Iowa State vs SUI College Choice

My eldest grandchild is a junior in high school and actively making her college choice.

I personally took her on her Ames campus visit and we had a glorious day together but she has already been on an Iowa City visit and also has a Lincoln and Columbia visit planned.

I desperately want all 8 of my grandchildren to go to Iowa State University for their undergraduate work but I fear that I will stumble at my first attempt at grandfatherly manipulation and propaganda.

My granddaughter liked the ISU campus and programs best but she was amazed at how much better the SUI dorms and food were which turns out to be a big deal. In Ames we toured Eaton Hall and Friley Hall and I can understand how it would be a downer. I did not see the Iowa City dorms or sample the Iowa City dorm food.

Most of her friends are planning on going to Iowa which might be a plus for ISU...

Who knows what she will find in Lincoln and Columbia.. This campus choice thing is very disconcerting for me and won't be resolved for another 3 months or so. I sure don't want to screw this up on my first try.

Linking a piece below on Storm Lake's Jaidyn Coon from my Rivals colleague on the Iowa site. Sounds like the Cyclones are expressing a bit of early interest.

***PLEASE NOTE: Busy weekend ahead on the home front***

Happy Friday afternoon,

It's a big weekend for the Mrs. and I, plus our respective families and friends, as our first-born (@cseals20) - yes he lurks here on occasion - is graduating from Southeast Polk HS this weekend. A full weekend of activities are on tap, some that started today and will continue tomorrow with his grad party and commencement and family party on Sunday.

That also means between now and Monday, I might be a little slower than usual in responding to board posts, personal messages on here, and emails. Also crossing my fingers that there will be no major breaking news to contend with. It's a slow(ish) time of year and probably will continue to be for another couple weeks until football camps start up on June 1st.

Connor will be moving on to Grand View University in the fall to major in Sports Management. He's also getting some scholarship money to play tennis there.

Exciting times in the Seals household!

Hope you all have a great weekend.
