2026 DT recruit

Apparently, we're recruiting a Juco DT by the name of Jowhar Franklin. Originally from New Orleans, he's 6-4, 315 and plays at Dodge City Community College. So far, we are his only P4 offer, but that wasn't always the case. He was a 3-star out of high school in 2024 with a buttload of P4 and P5 offers, including a bunch of bluebloods, like LSU, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State. I counted six teams that are now in the Big 12 that offered him out of high school, five big 10 schools and 7 SEC schools among his 27 offers in 2024. He's only got 12 offers this time around, and like I said, we're the only P4 offer.

Iowa State vs SUI College Choice

My eldest grandchild is a junior in high school and actively making her college choice.

I personally took her on her Ames campus visit and we had a glorious day together but she has already been on an Iowa City visit and also has a Lincoln and Columbia visit planned.

I desperately want all 8 of my grandchildren to go to Iowa State University for their undergraduate work but I fear that I will stumble at my first attempt at grandfatherly manipulation and propaganda.

My granddaughter liked the ISU campus and programs best but she was amazed at how much better the SUI dorms and food were which turns out to be a big deal. In Ames we toured Eaton Hall and Friley Hall and I can understand how it would be a downer. I did not see the Iowa City dorms or sample the Iowa City dorm food.

Most of her friends are planning on going to Iowa which might be a plus for ISU...

Who knows what she will find in Lincoln and Columbia.. This campus choice thing is very disconcerting for me and won't be resolved for another 3 months or so. I sure don't want to screw this up on my first try.

Triple Crown Horse Style

Came across this in Facebook (again since I joined the Secretariat page). I’ve probably watched it more than any sporting event. I still have trouble fathoming the enormity of this accomplishment. I believe he ran each 1/4 mile faster than the previous one. At the top of my bucket list was always to visit Big Red after he retired. Never made it.

Carbon Capture Pipeline

I'm all for protecting the environment, but it sure seems like there has to be better solutions than building pipelines to transport CO² over long distances where it can be stored underground. And why can't these pipelines be buried on existing rail and roadway easements?

Why not just build breweries and soda plants nearby and reduce the need for shipping CO² cross country? I'd be willing to sacrifice and drink a few extra beers to help the cause. 🍺🍺🍺🍺😁

What Is Your Favorite Weather App?

Over the years I have tried many weather apps. I mostly am interested in the weather radar display and sorting out what bad weather may be headed my way. I have a few go-to apps/websites depending on what I'm looking for, but I'd like to get some opinions on the favorites that other use.

Here are the ones I use:
I have gravitated to an app called Windy that is also available on a browser. I use it mostly for the weather radar, winds and storm warnings. I turn on the lightning with the sound effects as sensory feedback during electrical storms. You can sometimes determine where that loud thunderboomer just struck.

I also like the NWS website which gives an hourly graphical forecast. I have a number of locations stored as bookmarks. I use the NWS forecast most often for seeing what tailgating is going to look like. I've occasionally posted some of those graphs on the message board. This site seems to give me the most reliable weather forecast and I like the hourly format.

I also use the Ambient Weather website and app, primarily to look at the weather station I installed at the Crawford. I most often check it out for rainfall and look at the rainfall and winds from other weather stations around town and across the state.

NHL Playoffs

I have come to believe the NHL playoffs are some of, if not the most exciting, events in professional sports. Last night, Winnipeg is down 2 goals to STL with under 3 to go. They go empty net and score about a minute later. They go empty net again with about a minute to go. There was a stoppage with 46.6 seconds left. I remember thinking to myself to the STL goalie, it had to seem like time was standing still. Winnipeg scores with 1.6 seconds left. Winnipeg wins in 2OT and now meet the Dallas Stars. Constant pressure in that game 7. Great athletic event.

Could Canada soon be in a civil war?

Alberta and any other province has the legal right to leave Canada. But the wacko Marist in Quebec can not be trusted at all, and they likely are looking at lawfare, and then military action against the West, this include BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. I suspect this is going to get very ugly. Apparently Quebec has the right to leave, but screw the western provinces and their rights.

BASKETBALL ***RELEASE: Women’s Basketball Adds Evangelia Paulk to 2025-26 Roster***

Iowa State Media Relations

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State women’s basketball coach Bill Fennelly has announced the signing of Evangelia Paulk ahead of the 2025-26 season. Paulk comes to Ames from Wofford College and will have two years of eligibility remaining. She is the second transfer to commit to the Cyclones, joining Arizona transfer Jada Williams.

“We could not be more excited to add Evangelia to the Iowa State family,” said Fennelly. “Our goal as we looked at our team for next year was to identify specific people and players who fit the great culture we have in our program. E is exactly what we wanted and needed.”

Paulk’s impressive sophomore campaign in Spartanburg was rewarded with the SoCon’s Player and Defensive Player of the Year honors. She started all 29 games for the Terriers and averaged over 32 minutes per contest, leading the team in scoring (12.8 PPG), rebounding (8.4 RPG) and steals (95). Her steals total also led the conference while her scoring average was fourth and rebounding was second. The Asheville, North Carolina native knocked down 42 3-pointers and tallied 54 assists on the season. She scored in double figures in 18 games while tallying nine double-doubles.

“She gives us needed length and athleticism on the wing,” said Fennelly. “E is a two player that will give us more versatility at both ends of the floor. I know our fans will love watching her compete in a Cyclone uniform.”

As a freshman, Paulk earned the status as the conference’s Freshman of the Year, averaging 8.5 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. She swiped 46 steals as a rookie, starting all 30 games and playing nearly 30 minutes per contest. The 6-0 guard totaled five double-doubles as a freshman, a Wofford program record.
