Grill's Swipe and Steal.

Besides being grabbed, held and bumped on most of his cuts all night long, I think his steal down low late in the game might have been what pushed him over the edge. It was in front of me and the ball was low, he swiped down and quickly came away clean with both hands on it. The baseline ref was OK with it. The ref out front who called it was totally blocked out by whoever the OSU player was that Grill was stealing from.

Overall, I was not that upset with their calls tonight. Way more us and the way OSU played defense on us. But, when you see crap like that late in the game that's what you remember.

Various thoughts

1. It doesn't surprise me that UT/OU are leaving early and with a reduced payout. Jamie hinted as such several weeks ago on a video call with donors. On the same call, he said Gonzaga/Big 12 talks are real....but he struck me as not convinced (just my impression). Personally, there has to be more than just Gonzaga.
2. The PAC 12 is in a very difficult position. The Big 12 adding BYU & Houston and getting their media deal early really laid the wood to the PAC 12. The Big 10's move was a massive bomb. Between Yormark's stated goal of a PST presence and Gonzaga talks, it would not surprise me at all if some PAC 12 schools move to the Big 12.
3. The Big 12's leadership coupled with large, engaged fanbases has certainly helped the conference strengthen & rise from the ashes.

No. 3 Iowa State Wrestling Downs No. 14 UNI, 19-12

Iowa State has now won 18 Big 12 duals in a row, its longest conference unbeaten streak in program history.

The announced crowd of 5,754 — the largest wrestling crowd ever at the McLeod Center — saw the Cyclones win six of 10 matches, including four of the final five, to notch their fourth consecutive win over Northern Iowa.

I didn’t watch it on Flo but I’m guessing it was a hostile pro-Iowa crowd.

After Carr's major decision, he took a selfie with a group of kids that watched the dual behind Iowa State's bench. Another really cool moment inside a jam-packed McLeod Center, according to the Register story.

We are not getting jobbed by the refs

I know you conspiracy buffs claim that the refs have it out for us. First, it seems peculiar to me that the refs have singled us out and want us to lose, like some think. Second here are the stats: In 17 games with P5 opponents and a multitude of different reffing crews, we have been called for more fouls in 14 of those 17 games. At some point fans need to realize that we foul a lot and it has very little to do with the refs. In our style of play we are going to get a lot of fouls. We rarely take the ball to the hoop, while our opponents do so much more frequently and that is a recipe for us to foul more.

Wayne Stanley CyCast

You may have seen that there was a CyCast podcast released yesterday featuring Former ISU QB Wayne Stanley. It's a good listen if interested as he shares some good old stories about playing for Earle Bruce (and initially wanting him to get fired). At the end of the podcast he makes a brief mention of his son Demetrius Stanley needing prayers as he was fighting Prostate Cancer and was not doing well.

Unfortunately Demetrius lost his battle on Thursday morning at the age of 48. Demetrius was a well known former Buckeye wide receiver here in central OH and had been a fixture on local sports Buckeye coverage.

Wayne's career at ISU was before my Cyclone days (I was still in elementary school in SE Iowa), but I had one very brief chance to talk to him shortly after we moved to Ohio in the late 1990s. Seemed like a really good man and you could tell he still wanted to be engaged with Cyclone nation. Nothing much else to say but it struck me this morning as I saw the news about Demetrius, then not an hour later came across the new CyCast episode with Wayne. I've seen how the loss of a son (or any child) can hit a father...even when it happens later in life. And so am keeping Wayne and the entire Stanley family in thoughts and prayers.
