FOOTBALL RECRUITING Tough break for an Iowa State priority recruit

West Des Moines (IA) Valley junior WR Zay Robinson suffered a broken scapula in an intrasquad scrimmage and is facing a long rehab that puts him out for all of football season. Also a top player on the Tigers’ basketball team, he’s likely out for the entirety of hoops season as well. Awful news for a kid who I thought was on the verge of a breakout season.

Roster Reshuffling

Due to an (mostly) understandable lack of specific information, looking at our Roster is a bit of a crap shoot. But we do know some things looking towards the future.
  1. Brock, Lee, and Remsberg are out of eligibility in any scenario after this year. Remsberg is the only one that appears to have a chance of a reduced NCAA sentence, based on available information.
  2. Dekkers, Sauser, and Hanika had 1 year after this year. And only Hanika appears to have any hope of reinstatement by NCAA.
  3. Nickels was awarded one of the scholarships. That brings our scholarship total to 80. Thus, next year's class can be a little bigger than we originally estimated.
  4. We also may need to hit the portal, particularly on the offensive line. We are down to 13 scholarship offensive linemen. Hufford, Simmons, and Treiber are Seniors. IF they did not Redshirt in 2020, the may have a Super Senior Covid Year available. The usual target number of Offensive linemen in a program is 17-18. Keep an eye on this position.
  5. The rest of the roster appears pretty balance as to numbers.
I think we will look at offensive line portal additons IFF we are sure they can and will play. Otherwise, I look for the ones with Covid years to be re-recruited, particularly if we have growth we need and hope for.

We have very few seniors left, other than the offensive line identified. Dean, Stanley, Vaughn, Tampa, Porter (has Covid year), Nikkel.

Finally, are we reasonably sure we have our parties ALL identified?

Brett Yormark

After hearing newly hired Yormark give his introductory address, I remember posting on here that his run would be a success or failure based on action instead of inaction. For better or worse, he would make big, calculated moves. I also said he reminded me of the higher end private equity guys I've crossed paths with over the years. A shark. Needless to say, the university presidents hired the right guy at the right time. Effing impressive by all concerned.

Discover Any New Restaurants Lately?

I'm having a string of good luck finding new restaurants lately. At least new to me.

I recently discovered the Blue Fish Hawaii Poke Bowl in campustown and loved it. I've returned many times since despite the fact it was closed for a few weeks for the owners vacation.

Although not new, I've gained a new appreciation for Big Acai Bowl in Ames. I had a craving for some fruit so stopped in and ordered a bowl with an Oatmeal base, mixed fruit, granola and honey. Outstanding! I've been back a few times trying a sorbet base and the oatmeal again. Good stuff except something wasn't right with my second oatmeal bowl. I'll give them another chance. When its made correctly, its delicious.

Now to the real reason for this thread. A new locally owned Mexican place opened on Boyden Road in Hiawatha near the Lucky Penny. Its called 4 Hermanos. I love Mexican food and this is about as good as it gets for a fast casual restaurant. I've sampled a number of different things and each one is better than the last. I think its family owned & operated. If you're ever in Cedar Rapids check this place out.

So let's hear it. What new places have you discovered?

What’s up with the tennis team?

The fall tennis schedule is out, so I went to check the roster. There are just four players listed. The three new recruits and one returner. Of the eight on last year’s team, three were seniors. What happened to the other four, plus any seniors taking a grad year? Did any follow Boomer to his new school? Did any jump at opportunities with the tennis schools?

Regardless, looks like losing Boomer has left ISU in a lurch team wise.

Based on Poster Comments, A Look At Offense

Just some observations, based on people's comments on this board and a bit from a public domain Podcast on CF.

QB - a true open competition, probably starting wit Becht. Kohl is the fan favorite, but most "in the know" comments seem to think Becht is 1 for now.

RB - really a Committee at this point. Harris seems to draw least pub of the 5 and Norton and Sanders the most.

TE - Again, it seems to be a group of prospects. There was a picture of Brahmer catching a pass I saw. He absolutely looked the part. Well muscled, long (I looked for him as a WR 1st), and hands that just enveloped the ball. Kohler came to mind, but more physical looking.

WR - everyone seems high on Higgins. Ngoyi has kind of got the Gaines legendary status from a year ago. Returners need to step up or someone needs to step in.

OLine - I am tempted to say same old same old. Someone posted here(?) or on CF that Simmons was running with the 2's. Hopefully because someone better has been performing. Assuming Hufford and Miller are constants, and Clanton truly cross trains his linemen, the other 3 likely come from Bonifas, Petersen, Maro, Neal, Akinshilo, Treiber, Pauls, and Hasert, with maybe a heretofore unknown walkon thrown in.

This will be an interesting, evolving, and youthful offense.
