Last week I was talking to a father of a ISU Football recruit (has been offered by ISU). He said the family was at the game a couple of weeks ago. Met with both offensive and defensive coordinators. While they were having lunch they were asked if they'd like to meet coach Campbell. The dad said he looked at his watch and it was just a little over an hour before game time and couldn't believe the head coach would have time to spend with them. They did meet with him though and said he was a "great guy" and had done his homework. In addition to talking a lot to his son, he spent time talking to his daughter who is going to ISU next year then spent a lot of time talking to dad about football. He knew dad was a really good Divison III player and they talked about Campbell's time at Mt Union and dad's time a his college. I told the dad that every recruiting story I read about has the common thread of how recruits walk away with the feeling of "family" after a visit. Dad said, "that's exactly the word I was looking for." Needless to say, the whole family walked away thoroughly impressed. The following week the family went on another visit to Iowa City. Dad said they didn't even get to talk to a coach, only the recruiting coordinator. Took his son's measurements and that was about it. Said they walked away feeling like they were only a number. I'm so proud that we have a head coach, assistant coaches and a system that does the homework and treats these young athletes and their families with the respect they deserve. I think it has, and we will continue to see success because of stories like this. Will we sign this guys son? Don't know, because the entire family grew up cheering for the sqawks, but when I hear stories like this I like our chances.
