Iowa State Media Relations

IRVING, Texas – Iowa State guard Keshon Gilbert has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for the second time this season.

Gilbert turned in the eighth triple-double in Iowa State history and the second in the month of December in an 85-70 win over New Hampshire Sunday. He became the first player in Big 12 history to have 10 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists and four steals in a game. The sociology major tied a career-high in rebounds, while posting a career-high in assists. It was his 11th game this season scoring in double figures. Iowa State is the first school in Big 12 history with two different players recording a triple-double in the same season. The Big 12 leads the nation with five triple-doubles this season.

In 13 starts this season, Gilbert is averaging 14.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 2.1 steals per game. He is one of just three players in the nation averaging those totals.

Iowa State returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 6 against at Oklahoma in the Big 12 opener. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. in Norman.

Re: Transfer Portal

Question for Bill or anyone else in the know:

How does a portal athlete make the list at the top of the page? There are a multitude of players listed there, and only a few have actually been offered by the coaching staff. Are others on the list guys who have reached out to Iowa State, guys that the staff has identified as potential signees, or something else.

Inquiring minds want to know where this list originates…..

Washington vs Bevo nit

Did anyone else notice the TV camera obsession last night with close-ups of Sarkisian? My wife noticed it first in the first half. We counted over a dozen SS closeups in the first half and none of K DeBoer for Washington.

I bring this up as a big fan of DeBoer given his Sioux Falls playing/coaching roots and his NW Ia O Coordinator.

Was the TV director a UT grad or is this a conspiracy to boost ratings closer to Austin? It kind of grated on me because Sarkisian has proven to be such an arrogant ass-hat and DeBoer more of a small town humble guy from Milbank SD. The right team won IMO.

Will be curious to see if the in-game coverage disparity trend continues with another head coach ass-hat (Harbaugh) vs DeBoer. Guessing it will in spades.

Random thoughts

1. The ability of our football staff to manage the roster given the amount of cheating going on is impressive. There is zero chance the current environment is sustainable.
2. The ends of each half yesterday was unsettling. I hadn’t seen that this season, hope it doesn’t reappear.
3. Met Jack Sadowsky (make no mistake, that is one solid dude especially for a freshman), mom, & sister. Really nice folks.
4. Dylan Soehner bench pressing Brent Blum to raise money at the Will Will Collective pregame @ Railgarten in Memphis was entertaining.
5. We need to see if the owners of Flight restaurant in Memphis will relocate the entire operation to the DSM area. Outstanding food and even better service.
6. It’s a thin line between dive bar and sad bar, most Beale St establishments crossed over a while ago.
7. I hope the guys from Chicago I talked to Fri morning lived to tell about their golf round later that morning. Oof…I like to golf, but mid-30s…sprinkles…breeze? Screw that
8. Disappointing game…good season…get ready for next year

Winning Beyond The Margins

Every team has ups and downs. They don't always play their best. Some may be injured and at other times a player just might not have his mind into it. You can't expect to play at your best every time out. You can see that in college games and even the NFL.

We saw a rough performance by many in the bowl game and we were handily beaten by a G5 team. I believe we could have won if we played at our best. We put up great passing numbers. But we didn't play our best and in many aspects it was our worst. We need our floor to be higher than this.

It all starts in the trenches. Everything on offense gets easier with a great line. Clanton needs to get more out of the OL. And Heacock needs to fill the holes on the defense and make sure we get more pressure the QB so they don't all look like All-Americans against us.

Our best has been pretty good. But our worst is embarrassing. We need to win beyond the margins so that our worst is good enough to win.
