Mercury coach upset LA didn't sell out Brittney Griner's return to the WNBA

Well...I could have thought of hundreds of things to do in LA before I would have attended.

Heck, I could think of hundreds of things to do in Milwaukee if it was a January game before I would have attended, and I certainly wouldn't have attended just to see Griner.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head coach Kevin Dresser announced the addition of Sam Schuyler to his 2023-24 staff as a graduate assistant Monday afternoon.

"Sam sets a great example in the wrestling room for how our guys should go about their business and we are so excited to keep him in the program," Dresser said. "He will work towards his master's degree while continuing his wrestling career at the international level."

Schuyler spent his final two collegiate seasons at Iowa State following three years at Buffalo. The heavyweight finished his career with a 70-35 record, including a 37-13 mark as a Cyclone, and as a three-time NCAA Qualifier.

After going 0-2 at the 2022 NCAA Championships, Schuyler devoted his offseason to the weight room and perfecting his craft. The improvement was noticeable in his final season.

In 2022-23, Schuyler wrestled to a 20-5 record with 12 wins over ranked opponents, including seven ranked in the top 15. None of his five losses came against anyone seeded worse than No. 11 at the NCAA Championships.

Schuyler battled through injury to reach the blood round (Round of 12) at the NCAA Championships, but ultimately fell one win shy of All-American status. He logged the best conference finish of his career as a senior, placing second at the Big 12 Championship.

He became a reliable anchor to the Iowa State dual lineup. In four duals during the season, Iowa State's opponent had a chance to win the dual in the final match and Schuyler's win sealed it for the Cyclones. Most notably, when he secured a takedown with less than 15 seconds remaining to defeat No. 5 Dayton Pitzer (PITT) and win the dual.

Schuyler is currently a resident athlete at the Cyclone Regional Training Center.

He received his bachelor's degree in liberal studies from Iowa State in 2022 and is working towards a master's degree in higher education.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Ready to Report: Brendan Black

Wrapping this series up today with Brendan Black. I was pleasantly surprised with my contact rate on guys joining the program this summer. I think I got all but two, and those were Nebraska TE Benjamin Brahmer and Florida LB Norris Davis, which wasn't a huge surprise as they weren't much into talking throughout the recruiting process.

Just announced on social media by Okoli. If you'll remember, a few years ago he was on the same star-studded Kansas City (Mo.) Lincoln College Prep team that produced Howard Brown and Jermaine Hamilton-Jordan, who signed with Arkansas but is now bouncing back at a Kansas JUCO. Iowa State pursued all three, but Okoli was thought of as the prized recruit of the trio. He'll now be a Cyclone after transferring from Auburn.

Brett McMurphy CBS says OU WU vetted by Big 10

Not sure who knows anything, or who is looking to make money from followers and clicks, but Brett McMurphy of CBS is now saying OU and WU have been vetted by Big 10 to join the conference. Frankly, it makes more sense to have four west coast teams than two for pods. IF that would happen, and it's a big if, what teams make the most sense for the Big 12 to add? Would be nice to jettison Houston, but that won't happen.

RELEASE: Iowa State Adds Soares As Graduate Assistant Coach

Iowa State Media Relations

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly announced the addition of Stephanie Soares to his 2023-24 staff as a graduate assistant Friday afternoon.

“We are excited that Stephanie will continue to be with our program as a graduate assistant,” Fennelly said. “She makes our program better in every way. This will also allow her to complete her rehab so she is ready to begin her professional career.”

Soares, the No. 4 pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft by the Washington Mystics before being traded to the Dallas Wings, transferred to Iowa State for her final season of collegiate eligibility in 2022-23. She played in only 13 games for the Cyclones before her season was cut short due to a knee injury.

Despite her shortened season, the Sao Paulo, Brazil, native made an immediate impact for ISU. She averaged 14.4 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game for the Cyclones, reaching double figures in 11 contests and recording eight double-doubles.

Her season-high of 23 points came in wins against UNI and Michigan State. Soares pulled down 20 rebounds against West Virginia, recording the sixth 20-rebound game in school history.

Soares came to Iowa State after a standout career at The Master's University, where she was a two-time NAIA Division I Player of the Year. In 2021-22, she averaged 20.5 points, 12.2 rebounds and 3.7 blocks, en route to leading the Mustangs to a 32-4 overall record. Soares was also named the WBCA NAIA Player of the Year.

Soares also competed for her home country of Brazil in the FIBA World Cup in February 2022.

Basketball runs deep in the Soares family. Her mother, Susan, started 97 games at Texas under Jody Conradt, while her father, Rogerio, and three of her siblings all played basketball at The Master's.

Soares is pursuing her master’s degree in family and consumer sciences. She received her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and physical education from The Master’s University.
