GOP debates

I'm off the Vivek train. I like his energy but his naivate is troubling. I've ALWAYS loved Haley and I still do. I like Tim Scott's demeanor and approach and I've always been a fan of Christie (for some stupid reason). Pence is showing up in tough mode but he's the dyed in the wool christian candidate. I think Asa has much to offer but he won't break through. I think DeSantis is too Trump but he's showing up tonight too.

Pence had my favorite line - Vivek said we need a revolution and a reboot of America (paraphrasing badly) and Pence forcefully said a few times - America needs a government as good as it's people.

ISU NIL Events?

Brent, are there any BIG ISU NIL events in the works? Like A Big Summer Concert(s) at Jack Trice (like the old days, Pink Floyd, Billy Joel/Elton John, and The Rolling Stones, ALL IN 1994!)?

I suspect (hope) that Pollardville will feature a medium-sized venue(s) that can host some good ‘ole LIVE classic rock groups (or what’s left of them), and some up-and-comers (and not just rock, but also country, modern country, blues, maybe pop).

Wouldn’t that be great to walk from Hilton to an adjacent club and hear some great music, eat some delicious food, and celebrate the Cyclone basketball win over Iowa, Kansas and Baylor and the like??!!

ESPN+ question

For those who have ESPN+, does it have the games immediately available for replay?

I had a family commitment come up for Saturday that also starts at 1 pm. I'm planning to sign up for ESPN+ but if I have to wait the same week or two to get the UNI game on replay that I would have to wait to watch it on Cyclone TV, no point in buying ESPN+.

A couple of questions for Saturday

First, knowing that the game is on ESPN+, are those games put on Mediacom as well, as they used to be, or is this ESPN+ only?

If so, does anyone know if that is a channel they have at Mary Greeley?

My mom had a minor heart attack this morning. She's doing well, and further testing will determine the course of action.

I was coming back this weekend anyway, since this is the first football season since Dad's passing. I was planning on hooking my laptop up to her TV at her apartment this weekend, and we still may to that if she is released by then. However, if not, I'm trying to figure out how to watch the game with her if she is still here. I don't know if I can run an HTML cable into the sets at the hospital.

Thanks!

My aplogies

I have been pretty grouchy this last couple of weeks. And in looking at some of my posts, I got unnecessarily short, I think.

On Tuesday, August 15 we got word that my son-in-law's brother passed in Pittsburgh.

On Wednesday the 16th, we went to Des Mones for my wife's Wet Macular Degeneration treatment and my youngest son called to tell us our next door neighbors daughter had died suddenly.

We had a mini-vacation planned, going to the fair on Thursday and to an I-Cub game on Friday and my 60th HS class reunion on Friday. That was a great respite, but the heat that came in was tough on us old farts.

On Monday, I got a call that a close class mate had died. He had been at the reunion. Then, on Wednesday, I was told another classmate died. She was supposed to be at the reunion but did not come. She was found dead on Tuesday Evening and likely had passed the Saturday of our reunion.

I attended Chip's funeral which was held last Saturday the 26th in Oscola. Monday I got word that his wife passed the Sunday after Chip's funeral. It takes your breath away.

In the midst of all tht, my wife reacted to her WMD shot and had to get further treatment. And my phone conked out and I am now upgraded to an S23 Ultra which I am trying to figure out.

So I apologize for my grouchiness. And thanks for letting me get this off my chest.

FOOTBALL ***RELEASE: ISU's team captains have been named for the 2023 season***

Iowa State Media Relations

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell has announced the captains for the 2023 football season.

Seniors Easton Dean, Ben Nikkel and Gerry Vaughn are joined in the leadership role by juniors Beau Freyler and Jaylin Noel.

Easton Dean – R-Sr. – Oswego, Kan.
Dean arrived at Iowa State as a quarterback recruit and moved to tight end in 2019. He started six games last year while battling injury and is listed as an expected starter for the season opener Saturday against UNI. Dean has excelled in the classroom as well, earning Academic All-Big 12 first team honors three times.

Beau Freyler – Jr. – Colorado Springs, Colo.
A safety for the Cyclones, Freyler has started 12 games and compiled 109 tackles in 24 games. He earned honorable mention All-Big 12 accolades in 2021 and 2022. Freyler is also a leader in the classroom, being named a College Sports Communicators (CSC) All-District selection last season.

Ben Nikkel – R-Sr. – McPherson, Kan.
Nikkel joined the Cyclones as a walk-on in 2021 and redshirted his initial season. In 2022, he played in all 12 games as a special teams standout and in August of 2023 he was placed on scholarship. Nikkel was initially a wide receiver before moving to defensive back.

Jaylin Noel – Jr. – Kansas City, Mo.
Noel is entering his junior season as a very productive wide receiver for the Cyclones. He enters his third season with 99 career receptions for 841 yards and three career touchdowns. Noel is on the Paul Hornung Award watch list, which recognizes the most versatile player in college football. He was named to the Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team in 2021 and was an Academic All-Big 12 Second Team selection in 2022.

Gerry Vaughn – R-Sr. – Atlanta, Ga.
Vaughn, a linebacker, has made 18 career starts for the Cyclones and led the team in tackles a season ago with 71. He is Iowa State’s 2023 Jack Trice Endowed Scholarship recipient and is also on the Wuerffel Trophy watch list, which honors players who are inspired to serve others and make positive impacts on society. Vaughn is a four-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree.

Surcharge for season FB tickets

I am probably the last person to realize this, but yesterday was trying to reconcile pricing for tickets I bought for a friend. They are in Section 35 and I paid $599 apiece. I was confused because the single-game price comes to just $540.

In other words, it would have been cheaper to buy single-game tickets for all home games than to buy a season ticket.

The ticket office "explained" that they kept the season ticket price the same even though there is one fewer game this year. That's nuts. If they were going to do that, why didn't they raise the single-game ticket price, too?
