Expectations v Perfomance

For 1 game, I think we can be moderately satisfied. Coming into the season we were very young, talented but young. We played a lot of young guys.

We need QB who is accurate and protects the ball. 10-13, 2 TDs, no ints for Becht.

We need better productivity from running backs. Not spectacular but Norton and Sama showed promise.

Ditto for TE. Lots of productivity here. Both TD receptions

We need the Oline to be improved. Jury still out.

We need improved Special Teams play. Great punting, good returns, 56 yd FG, mostly good coverage. Fumbled (bad) snap. Much improved.

We need the defense to remain strong. 2 picks, less than 50% completion, 2.7 ypc. Lots of players. Good start.

We are probably most worried about OLine development and QB growth.

A wondering mind wants to know:

Someone brought this up to me yesterday, and now I'm wondering too:

All the stadium lights were on yesterday afternoon.

On a bright and absolutely clear afternoon, 94 degrees with full sunshine, with a game starting in early September at 1:00 and ending no later than 4:30, most likely....what would be the purpose of having stadium lights on?

I'm not being critical...just curious.

Also...the lights were probably on a good 6 hours, at least, since they're on long before the game.

What would it cost to have the entire bank of lights on for 6 hours? A thousand dollars...five thousand? More or less? Again, just curious.

If they turned the lights off, maybe we could afford paper tickets again, LOL. And maybe Chuckie's Tenderloins could accept cash. Just an attempt at a little "cashless society" humor there.

I know it's early, but ..

Jeremiah Cooper is tied for second in the country with 2 interceptions. Some guy from Coastal Carolina had 3 INTs in their first game.

Caleb Bacon is tied for 4th with two sacks per game.

Jalyin Noel is 4th in the country in punt return average at 30 yards per return.

Tyler Perkins is second in the country in punting average at 53.62 yards per punt.

That is all.

Looks like no printing of FB tix this year

I'm one of those reluctant to have my tix and parking pass on my phone. Just trust myself more with the paper copy in hand rather than on my phone.

When I look on cyclones.com, I don't see a "print" option on them this year like in the past. It seemed like this was coming, but I fail to see how this is a time saver at the gates or a cost cutting measure for the athletic dept. Guess I will have to adapt but still not happy.

FOOTBALL ***RELEASE: Kohl named to Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Watch List***

Iowa State Media Relations

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State freshman quarterback JJ Kohl has been named to the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award watch list.

Kohl, a 6-7 signal caller from Ankeny, Iowa, joined the Cyclones in January of 2023 and is competing for action at quarterback this fall.

He was a consensus four-star recruit out of high school and arrived at Iowa State as a top-10 quarterback nationally according to ESPN and Rivals. Kohl was also an Under Armour All-America game participant.

He is one of three quarterbacks on the list of 37 players, joining Arizona State’s Jaden Rashada and UCLA’s Dante Moore.

Kohl and the Cyclones open the 2023 season Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium against UNI.

Special teams

Kudos to the special teams yesterday!! SIAP but that's the best special team performance in a long time. I said before we kicked that 56 yarder before halftime that if he makes it we're going to the Big 12 championship game. Maybe it was a little stretch but that was impressive. So if I remember last year I was complaining because our punter was only about 12 yards deep. Maybe I don't remember it quite right but yesterday he was a good 15 yards from LOS and that made me happy. He was never pressured when last year it seemed we were gonna get it blocked about every punt.
