Joens makes history

Cyclone WBB played Texas Southern at 11 this morning in Hilton and won 79-59. Sophomore Ashley Joens scored 30 points (16 of 18 free throws) and nabbed 20 rebounds--the first 30 point, 20 rebound game in Cyclone history. Overall, the gals shot poorly and only led by 7 after 3 quarters.

Not sure if Ashley's record performance covers both men and women's programs. Kind of assuming it does.

Uniforms

Anybody want to see us do something completely off the wall with uniforms this week.

Maybe white helmet, black tops and red pants?

Something we have never seen before? We have all these uniform combinations however it seems week in and week out we are in something that we have seen before. If we have as many options as Oregon why not use them?

It would be great

if we could have 59,559 in attendance on Saturday as that would put ISU at 60,000 average attendance for the 2019 season. Not good odds to get that, but maybe. Meanwhile, it's pretty much assured that the Cyclones will finish #21 in the country in attendance with TOE #20. FTH. For some perspective this is where ISU's attendance would rank vs the Power 5 conferences:
SEC 9th
Tiny 10 8th
Big 12 3rd
ACC 2nd
PAC 12 2nd
Pretty damn impressive. We belong.

Cyclones in the NBA

There's been threads about this before, but if you follow Cyclones in the NBA on Twitter, there's a lot more activity lately. Matt Thomas is tearing it up for the Raptors, and Naz Long had his best game as a Pacer last night.

We had 7 NBA players on that team. Doubt that's ever happened before:

That 2014-15 Roster is just ridiculous in hindsight:
Nader - getting some minutes on Thunder
Morris - backup PG for Nuggets, plays a lot
BDJ - had just signed a 2 year deal with Pelicans
Naz - starting to play more on Pacers
Burton - getting some minutes on the Thunder
Niang - getting decent minutes on the Jazz
Matt Thomas - top 3 point shooter for the Raptors

Throw in McKay and Hogue who are playing professionally overseas. What a waste of a season getting bounced in the first round.

Glad to see the guys succeeding though.

My wife posed this watching UT replay

We were watching the UT replay tonite on the non buffering at the time CyclonesTV. My wife asked me this...(well not to this detail, but this is the point)
If ISU had not moved after Texas went offsides on the field goal attempt, so the refs let the play go, and if the kick had been good, would you take the points off the board and take the first down?

Of course this is a moot point, but play pretend on that. If you take the points, you would be kicking off to Texas with a narrow lead, with 2 minutes to go (and no Texas timeouts).

That's a tough one to me. Based on the end of the 1st half, I have no confidence that the D would be able to stop Texas from driving down and getting a FG. But man, I would sure hate taking a lead off the board that late in the game.

So my vote would be no, but totally ok with it earlier in the game. What say you?

How Sad Is This?

It hit me this morning that we have 6 wins...6 WINS with two games to go! I admit that I have let myself focus on the losses and haven't stopped to reflect. I admit to being one of the old guys on here. For years I have said, "If we could just win 6 or 7 games a year I would thrilled!" So, here we are for the third year in a row with 6, and hopefully more, wins in the bank. I am going to stop and smell the roses!I! Thank you to Iowa State for taking the steps necessary to lift us out of years of anonymity and being just an after thought to college football. Forgive me for not being grateful the entire season. It feels really good.

2 tickets, parking pass for Kansas City and Florida A&M

That's Kansas CITY, not Kansas, just to make sure it's clear.

That game is Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. The Florida A&M game is New Year's Eve at 6 p.m.

Tickets are on the aisle in Section 110, Row 6. That's the lowest row in what used to be called the Parquet, behind the opponents' bench, basically looking at the end line. The parking pass is good for lots C3, C4 or D2.

Face value for the tickets is $35. I'd like to have $50 for the two tickets and the parking pass (each game).

FOOTBALL Kolar a Semifinalist for Mackey Award

ISU Athletics Communications

The Friends of John Mackey have announced today eight semi-finalists for the 2019 John Mackey Award and Iowa State sophomore tight end Charlie Kolar made the list.

The eight semi-finalists were determined by confidential balloting of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee. The award is given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end and the recipient will be announced on Dec. 11.

Kolar is having the greatest season by a tight end in Iowa State history in 2019, leading the Big 12 in receptions (41), receiving yards (549) and receiving touchdowns (7). Kolar’s season receiving yard total is a school record by a tight end and his seven touchdowns is one shy from the school mark set by E.J. Bibbs (8) in 2014.

Among tight ends nationally, Kolar ranks fourth in touchdown catches (7), seventh in receiving yards per game (54.9) and eighth in receptions per game (4.1).

A native of Norman, Okla., Kolar has played at an All-American rate all season. His Pro Football Focus (PFF) receiving grade of 90.6% is No. 1 nationally (200 snaps) and his overall offensive grade is at 86.0%, the second-best total nationally among tight ends (200 snaps).

Kolar has been Davey O’Brien Award semi-finalist Brock Purdy’s favorite target. The 6-6, 252-pounder has routinely come up with big plays with his outstanding hands and precise routes. A total of 32 of his 41 receptions have resulted in first downs or touchdowns and he’s been on the receiving end of 13 3rd/4th down conversions, including three of ISU’s four 4th down conversion receptions.

Kolar, who has four 70-yard receiving games this season, has an active streak of a touchdown catch in four-straight games to tie for the third-longest string in school history.

Kolar was honored as an Academic All-District 6 selection by CoSIDA and is in the running for Academic All-America accolades. He maintains a 3.98 cumulative GPA in mechanical engineering.

The Mackey Award finalists are announced on Nov. 25.
