FOOTBALL The Cyclones are now (un)officially at 85 scholarships

I've confirmed that linebacker Cole Pedersen is no longer with the program. The in-state signee from the 2020 class played in nine games that year as a true freshman, but injuries have cost him big-time over the past two seasons. He will be taking a medical hardship and remaining a student at Iowa State.

With that move, the Cyclones are now at 85 scholarships according to my pipelines.

Basketball tidbits

I found myself listening to a podcast, something that to me is usually akin to jabbing a stick in my eye, but the title of this one was intriguing to me, so I listened for as long as I could stand it.

So here is what I gleaned from this podcast on how basketball practice has been going.

* Tamin Lipsey has been working hard on his 3-point shot and has improved it tremendously.

* Hasan Ward has put on some muscle and is unrecognizable from last year. His play has been night and day over what it was last year. The players all look up to him, as I understand it.

* Tre King is also improved and looking dominant.

* Keshon Gilbert was the hardest working player in the Mountain West last year and won't let anyone outwork him. His defense is lights out and he ratchets up the intensity for the whole squad during practice.

* The overall talent of the squad has taken a giant leap forward and all three of the transfers are going to see significant playing time. Robert Jones may see less playing time.

If all this is true, that's 4/5ths of your starting lineup, leaving one spot left, I assume for Biliew. I still don't see how you can leave Momcilovic on the bench after what CTJO said about his defense being a surprise in his last media conference. I'm glad it's not my problem to solve.

Big 12 Undergraduate Acceptance Stats

The Rise of the Big 12 Facebook Fan Page had this spreadsheet. Some interesting stats. Surprised that KSU is as small as it is. UCF boasts an incoming HS GPA above 4.0. I need to confirm that. All the GPAs look high. I know that AP classes can do that because an A is 5. Author’s Source is prepscholar.com Fall 2021.

A question for you grillers

I don't really have a place to grill, so I don't even own a grill anymore, but there's one thing that puzzles me. More and more, I see people smothering their cuts of meat in yellow mustard before slapping it on the grill or smoker. I'd like to know what the benefit of smothering a prime cut of meat in mustard is. Does it make it more tender or juicy? Or is it just a base so that your other spices and rubs have something to stick to, rather than fall off the meat when you handle it? Is it just meant for one type of meat, like pork, or do you do it with all your meat? It's always seemed counterintuitive to me to smother meat in mustard BEFORE cooking.
