Iowa State Media Relations

AMES, Iowa - Weekly honors continue to roll in for quarterback Rocco Becht after his impressive performance against Oklahoma State. The Cyclone signal caller has been named the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Week, the Maxwell Football Club announced Tuesday.

Becht completed 27 of 38 passes for 348 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in a 34-27 victory over the Cowboys. He is one of four quarterbacks in ISU history to record a game with 300-plus yards passing, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Becht's three touchdowns, 27 completions and 348 yards were all career bests.

With the win, the Wesley Chapel, Fla. native joined Brock Purdy and Kyle Kempt as quarterbacks under coach Matt Campbell to win their first career Big 12 start.

Becht has a passing touchdown in each of his first four career starts and his total of seven on the season are the fifth-most in school history by a freshman.

The Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award has been presented to the College Freshman Player of the Year since 2018 and is named in honor of Shaun Alexander, a former standout at the University of Alabama and with the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL.

Becht was also named to the Davey O'Brien Award's Great 8 List for Week 4, which recognizes the top quarterback performances from around the country, yesterday.

About the 3rd and one at the 7:20 mark last game.....

and a few comments.

1). I thought Eli had the 1st down after looking at the game and on film when I re-watched it....and it would have kept the clock moving for 4 more downs....making Okie State's comeback nearly impossible.

2). We need a short yardage package on 3rd and one (short) plays. I remember we had an Ankeny kid named Joel Lanning that was money about 5 years ago. (I know our O line was was much more physical then...but). Instead of Rocco trying to sneak....how about putting in Ankeny 6' 7" J.J. Kohl 250 lb. or QB 6' 5 " Tanner Hughes at 240 lbs. I know our line still has to make a push....but the extra length and girth could have made the difference for the 3rd down play. They may want to save J.J., but then use QB Hughes if J.J. may be the heir apparent in future years. I totally understand the urgency of trying to catch Okie State off guard at the time, but our line just is not getting the push we need quite yet. Just a little Monday morning QB ing on my part, but that is what message boards are for.

3). Being a long time Cyclone fan that dates back to attending Johnny Major games....I thought not making that critical 3rd down was going to come back and haunt us. Thankfully our D pulled it out at the very end.

Overall...not bad Offensive play calling by Nate...and Heacock gets the job done again, although it was not a typical Jon H. 2nd half.

Hats off to CMC and the team for a truly gritty win.

Maybe he has seen the light..........

CMC........ “If you look at the game last week, you’re not disappointed with how we played. You’re disappointed in maybe some of the detail and precision. I’m probably more disappointed in myself as a coach – afraid to cost us the game instead of going to win the football game. I feel like (for) our young team, it’s (about) earning the right to go win the game, rather than sitting back and trying to not screw the game up.

Norton

I was busy managing the beer tent for our town festival yesterday, so I'm just watching my recording now.

What is the word on Norton? Looked like a dislocated shoulder or broken collarbone to me.

I don't know how long I'll be able to stay awake watching the game. According to my FitBit, I walked 15.9 miles from 9 am to 1 am, mostly in a 25' x 35' footprint around the keg trailer. Daddy's TIRED today!

More Money details...big 12 vs texas and Ou

Some of this sounds like the big 12 let them off easy. Either way it worked out for the big 12 schools I guess. Colorado got a 2.5 million signing bonus.

Thoughts

Winning fixes a lot!

They finally let Rocco be Rocco.
Started out with more receiving talent on the field.

WE even saw a slip screen!
Though our center didn't get to where the block was needed.
Signs coaching is at work.

#51 was a revelation.
We hiding any other guys that actually can block???
True freshman, right???
Things changed with him out there.
Doubt the TV guys figured out the change.

Sanders runs with more decisiveness. Finds a crease and goes.
We've figured that position out.
Keep him healthy.

Got to stop giving up big plays.
One is on the coaches.
You have to call TO with Bacon isolated on speed.
Safeties asleep when that happened???
I'm yelling at the TV pre-snap.

We keep bringing in DBs and all did some good things.

Other things to needle on but today is not the day.
Pretty happy they rose up.

Now go find another W.
