FOOTBALL ***Tampa is Bednarik Award Semifinalist

Iowa State Media Relations

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State defensive back T.J. Tampa has been named a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award, given annually to the nation’s most outstanding defensive player. Tampa is one of 20 players on the list.

Tampa, a St. Petersburg, Florida, native, has had an outstanding senior season. He’s allowed just one touchdown in 320 coverage snaps and has compiled 33 tackles, two interceptions and seven pass breakups this season.

Tampa and the Cyclones host No. 7 Texas Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on FOX.

Question on illegal shift

I'm watching the ISU vs BYU huddle highlights on youtube and on the second drive after the kickoff fumble recovery, on second down ISU was called for an illegal shift which wiped out a 3rd and short up coming.

Noel is in motion and Higgings takes two little steps back and reset. He was set for at least another 2 seconds before the snap while Noel was still in motion and slowing down to run behind Higgings.

I thought two players had to be in motion while the ball is being snapped for it to be illegal motion?

Post of the Year Nomination

Just a general observation here. One of the things I really like about Abu is he is not afraid to give the defender his shoulder and try to run thru him if needed. He is not just relying on his speed. For a true Freshman he plays with a lot of moxie. With continued health and an improving OL, I think he's going to be great before its over. And, he is not the only one in the RB room who can contribute 👍 Coach Clanton, let's get that OL development on the fast-track;)
What's this have to do with old men peeing? Take it Off Topic! Unless you can shed light on Abu's streaming services.

The above was a reply by SpokaneCy to my post INRE Abu. As with many threads, it got a little off-track with urinary excretory function commentary. For reasons unknown to me, Bill locked it down (which is why I must comment on this forum). I mean we've had far worse meanderings. Anyway, I am still laughing at SpokaneCy's reply! Certainly worthy of POTYN in my book 😂 😂 😂

FOOTBALL ***RELEASE: Sama Named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week***

Iowa State Media Relations

IRVING, Texas – Abu Sama III has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Monday. It is the first weekly honor of his career and Sama is the fourth Cyclone to be recognized by the conference this season.

Sama put on a show in Iowa State’s 45-13 victory at BYU Saturday night with 110 rushing yards and two touchdowns on eight carries – good for an average of 13.8 yards per touch. His 110 yards and two scores were both career bests.

The Des Moines native had a pair of highlight-reel touchdowns from distances of 13 and 59 yards. His 59-yard score in the fourth quarter was the longest of his career and the longest rushing touchdown by ISU since Breece Hall against TCU in 2021 (80 yards).

Sama’s 100-plus yard performance, the first of his career, was the first by an ISU running back since Jirehl Brock last season (vs. Iowa) and the first by a Cyclone freshman since Hall did so against Texas in 2021.

Iowa State is back in action Saturday, Nov. 18 against Texas for its final home game of the season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (CT) on FOX.

What true Freshmen have played past their redshirt?

I was surprised to see Kohl get put in. I realize he is still good if he only plays in 1 of the remaining 2, but it surprised me still. They had already gone with Tanner Hughes previously, not sure why they didn't go back there.

Who has burned (and that sounds bad, but I don't mean it that way at all) their redshirt?
Going thru the roster..
has Ngoyi?
Brahmer obviously
I'm assuming Patton has?
Samu obviously
Hansen seems like he has played in at least 4 games
Sadowsky obviously
Black Obviously

BIG THANK YOU to Jordan Langs (and the other postition coaches)

I am throwing out my bonafide appreciation for Matt Campbell's coaching staff, especially to Jordan Langs. I have been an Cyclone fan since my freshman year (at Iowa State) in 1969. Johnny Majors had an outstanding young coaching staff; but, Coach Campbell may have put together a better one. All one needs to do is to watch any of the special teams play to understand what a difference Coach Langs has brought to this team. (For the most part) they certainly seem like they know what they are doing and they understand their roles. Likewise with the running back room. I realize what a talented group they are; but, they play with a purpose.

This same appreciation can certainly be extended to the other position coaches (and their group coaches). I just felt that a big thanks needed to be sent out !

FB: What I thought vs what happened

Just going back to what I thought going into the season vs observations through 10 games.

QB: I thought that Rocco would be a game manager. Make the easy throws and try not to turn the ball over. He's been more than that...at least after the staff started trusting him more. He's not perfect and he's not Brock Purdy, but he does a lot of good things. He still struggles with accuracy at times and has thrown some bad pick 6's, but for the most part you can count on him to hit guys that are open and move the ball down the field. I figured that Kohl might be pushing him by now and that we'd have running packages for Hughes. Neither of those have happened and Becht has been better than I had hoped.

RB: I really didn't know what to think of this group going in. Sanders had trouble seeing the hole and went down too easily. Norton was injury prone. Sama and Hansen were TRFR and Harris barely played at Stanford. Well, Sanders has improved a ton. Norton hasn't missed very many games. Sama has started to show real potential as a feature back. I knew in the summer that we had a bunch of backs with different skillsets, but none of them had really proven anything yet and none of them were Jirehl Brock. But they've all slowly improved and at this point, we have a nice rotation.

WR: Guess I didn't expect much here. I was very critical of Noel for his drops and being soft. Higgins had hype, but it was at a lower level. Stanley didn't do much last year and Jackson couldn't stay on the field. They had some young guys that had potential, but that's it. Noel doesn't look soft any more and he's not dropping balls either. Higgins has turned into a solid target. He's not Hutchinson, but with Noel picking up the slack, he doesn't need to be. Jackson has stayed healthy and is contributing. Stanley is still Stanley. Guess I'm a little disappointed that guys like Gaines, Essex, Ngoyi haven't made a dent, but I can't complain about what the starters are doing.

TE: Was a weakness last year and I wondered how they would be better without Hanika. Well, it's a strength this year. Most of that is Brahmer catching the ball, but Dean and Klotz are also blocking better. We're not as predictable with the H-Back and we're actually sealing the edge at times, which was a huge problem last year. Brahmer is only going to get better and he's good now.

OL: I expected some struggles early on and slow improvement. That's kind of what we've gotten. I did not expect Brendan Black to be starting games. I thought with Hasert out and Remsburg sitting 6 games, we might be in trouble. We're still not good, but it seems like we're inching towards average. I would have signed up for that in a second in August.

DL: I figured that Orange and Onyedim could do their jobs well. Singleton and Okoli mixing in behind them would be good depth. My one concern was pass rush out of what I thought would be a rotation of Peterson, Ezeogu and Adam. Guess I wasn't far off here other than getting a few names wrong. RE is still a concern, but our coverage has been good enough at times where we could bring a LB and not be hurt by it.

LB: We had one solid returnee and a bunch of bodies. When they named Sadowsky a starter, I figured we had our next Mike Rose. He's OK, but he doesn't make plays as a TRFR that Rose did. Lovett has turned into a good spy. McLaughlin has been better at LB than I thought he'd be. Bacon has been really good rushing the passer. Overall, LB hasn't been great and even Vaughn takes really bad angles at times. I guess the silver lining is that most of them are young and will get better. And we get another 3 really good players coming in next summer. Competition is going to be stiff at LB the next few years.

DB: I thought that we had an elite group and we do. My one hesitation was that the Safeties had all had injury issues in the past. That has come back to bite us some and the backups either aren't very good or aren't ready. It's just a tough situation for a young player, because this defense absolutely depends on the Safeties to make the right decisions and tackle well. Get Cooper back and we'll be fine. Everyone returns for next year and the young guys will have a year under their belts.

ST: If someone would have asked me what are we going to do without Chase Contrerez in 2024, I would have laughed at them. But he's been really good. Figured Perkins would have a good year. He just needed to get his punts off quicker and he had a whole offseason to work on that. I've been really impressed with our return game. Didn't think Noel had that in him and honestly, I thought that we had the wrong guy back there. I don't now.
