Brock with a nice little wedding gift from the league...

Didn't know they did this, but league gives performance bonuses for players who play beyond their paygrade. BP gets $750K and is the only QB being rewarded.

Easter

I'm looking at a pic this morning from yesterday. It's a car full of large men packed in a car. All are in button-up dress shirts on their way to church in Ames.

Imagine them packed in that car. Every shoulder, knee and elbow touching something. And all smiling ear to ear.

No one made them do this. They simply got out of bed and went together, as the brothers they are.

There is no other image from this year that makes me more proud than this one.

For the podcast crowd....

The topic below referenced Kantrail Horton. Here's a very long (half hour) conversation with Kantrail from 5-6 years ago. Interesting background listening, fwiw.

Growing up in Georgia, Kantrail Horton had a very successful high school career and had signed with Larry Eustachy to play at Utah State. That is until one morning morning SportsCenter told him his coach was heading to ISU. A phone call later that settled that Coach Eustachy wanted Horton to come to Ames with him… after a short detour to finish junior college out in California. Kantrail shares how growing up playing at ‘The Gate’ and his time in California shaped him as a player and man. Those twists and turns prepared Horton to be the player that Cyclones fans know and loved.Once in Ames, Kantrail Horton joined one of the best Cyclone teams in history. This interview goes into great detail about the chemistry of playing with Cyclone greats like Marcus Fizer, Jamaal Tinsley, Stevie Johnson and Moonlighter Paul Shirley. Hortons Cyclone career was during the best stretch in ISU men’s basketball history, 1999-2001. Four wins vs. KU, 2 Big XII titles and an Elite 8 finish all standout as highlights, but perhaps most impressive is that Horton never lost a game at Hilton Coliseum. Those career highs, and the obvious pride in his current work as a mentor and trainer, are coupled with two truly unique lows. The first was the Elite 8 loss to Mateen Cleaves and Michigan State in 2000 and then the 2 vs. 15 loss to Hampton in 2001 that you’ve heard about every March since.Kantrail Horton is easily a favorite guest of the Moonlight Graham Show and we think you’ll see why right away. It is easy to hear his passion for basketball, his teammates and coaches, and his continued career with the game he loves in this week’s conversation.

Terrance Shannon's legal entanglements

Read the linked article and it reminded me of Royce Hooks & Brent Nash. Hooks & Nash were charged with 2nd degree sexual assault involving Marcel & Aaron Howard's younger sister, Ashley. Hooks & Nash were removed from the team and later Hooks was found not guilty and Nash's charges were dropped. I can see kicking them off the team simply for both of them being involved with a teammate's sister, but doesn't ISU have the rule that athletes are suspended from play when charged with sexual assault...just as Illinois has? I can see both sides. You don't want to have a coach/administrator decide if an athlete can still play, but also the athlete can be seriously damaged from being removed from the team. Innocent until proven guilty? I don't believe in "you have to believe her", I do believe law enforcement/legal system have to diligently investigate & prosecute if facts dictate.

TV ratings

As an amateur social scientist, I always find TV ratings to be interesting. And to that, I noticed something really interesting in regards to the women's BB ratings. The 18-34 demo is NOT watching Iowa women's basketball. They do get good ratings, but it is either the very young or the very old that are watching them. Here's the example.

On Saturday, Iowa/Holy Cross on ABC got 3.2 Million viewers, which is very good. But only 250K in the 18-34 demo.
The ISU men on Saturday, got 2.2 Million viewers on TNT, but 440K in the 18-34 demo
The ISU women did very well on Sunday, considering the hour and with some men's games going on. They got 1.2 Million viewers with 136K viewers in the demo. So to compare, Iowa WBB got almost 3 times the viewers of the ISU women, but not even 2 times the viewers, in that 18-34 demo.

Another way to look at it, overall, the Iowa women had 1 million more overall viewers than the ISU men, but in the 25-54 demo, the ISU men outdrew them 860K to 815K.

If you look at other games, it plays out too. Obviously Iowa WBB is a draw, but it is just a weird demographic that they draw compared to other sports.

HERE is where I get my numbers--Sports Media Watch

THANK YOU!

I want to thank the players on this team (and staff) for what they've done this season. Not a single vote in the pre-season polls. Picked middle of the pack in conference IIRC. The result was outstanding and the potential was there for even more.

In particular, I want to thank Hason, Tre and BRE. You guys gave us something we really needed. Your inside presence and all that comes with was essential to the team's success. You all played fearlessly and we needed that.

Big Rob you were the heart and soul of this team in my view. I will always remember and appreciate how you grew year-to-year. You put in the work for us. Take that with you wherever you go in life!

For those who can return next year, I hope you want to part of taking it even further. You can go somewhere for money. But you will never go somewhere else and find Cyclone Love. It's real. You put in the work like this team has and I seriously believe we can win the NC. I am certain it is within our reach.

Whatever tomorrow holds, I hope each of you have truly enjoyed being part of this team (to me it looks like you have). I pray your lives are Blessed. Thank you for allowing this Cyclone (and no-doubt many more) to enjoy living vicariously thru all your hard work.

Is It Football Season Yet ??

Time to switch my brain to football mode for the next 10 months or so. Hoping for another Super Bowl for Brock and improved seasons for the other Cyclones in the league.

It will be interesting to see how the new Big 12 looks and feels. It will definitely be different not having Oklahoma as one of our foes. Never felt that way about Texas.
