Iowa State Media Relations

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State sophomore Luke Gutschewski is headed to the NCAA Austin Regional as an individual selection. The NCAA Austin Regional is hosted by Texas and will take place May 13-15 at The University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas.

This is the 10th time in program history that an individual has been selected for the NCAA Regionals, while Gutschewski becomes the first player in program history to earn two individual bids to the NCAA Regionals.

This season, Gutschewski led the team in scoring average at 70.76, birdies (132) and eagles (6), while also earning five top-10 finishes. Gutschewski’s best finish came at the Zach Johnson Invitational where he earned medalist honors with a 198 (65-67-66) total, a 54-hole school record.

Gutschewski also earned runner-up honors at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic and was third at the Iowa Fall Classic and the Tiger Collegiate Invitational. Gutschewski is currently ranked No. 137 in the country.

Last year, Gutschewski qualified for the NCAA Norman Regional. He finished in a tie for 23rd with a 213 over the three rounds. He shot a 71 in the final round.

On the Cyclones’ all-time career stroke average list, Gutschewski currently sits in the top spot with a 71.56 average. At a 70.76 scoring average this season, Gutschewski is also on pace for the lowest single-season stroke average in Iowa State history, a record he set last season with a 70.78 stroke average on the year.

Gutschewski will look to qualify for his first career NCAA Men’s Golf Championship appearance. To qualify for the championship, Gutschewski will need to be the low individual not among the five teams advancing.

The 2024 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship will take place on May 24-29 at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.

Biden is now the worst POTUS in 70 years.

According to the latest Gallop poll, Biden is more unpopular that Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon. That is actually a horrible accomplishment. Carter was the least effective POTUS I have ever seen. Until now. Biden is making everyone's life worse. Biden is dividing America. Biden is CAUSING wars by being a pussy. He has added 400K to the cost of buying an entry level house. He has caused massive inflation which we will all have to pay for the rest of our lives, since inflation increases prices permanently. Thanks Brandon voters. You have f#cked us all.

Chickens

How big are they making chickens now days? I'm making stir-fry and I bought a package of boneless, skinless chicken breasts a few days ago and when I go to open the package, discover there's only two breasts in the package. But what magnificent breasts. I usually use three in my stir-fry so I have a bunch of leftovers, but I only needed one for this batch, they were so huge. Looks more like the size of a turkey breast.

Steve Corbin

Anybody familiar with this guy? Apparently he is a retired marketing professor at UNI who actually was Department head at one time. He is a perfect example of the liberal indoctrination taught by college faculty, particularly tenured professors.

He has a serious case of Trump Derangement Syndrome and feeds his symptoms by writing a column that gets printed in many small newspapers across the Midwest. Here’s just a recent example.

Rooftop solar panels are flooding California’s grid

I found this interesting. It surprised me the amount of solar power that is being generated in California. It's a problem now, but it seems solvable with technology. Solving the business problem may be a bigger challenge.

Years ago I thought it would be great if power distribution was not primarily via a grid, but rather produced locally at each consuming entity. An efficient and safe means of storing energy when the sun is not shining is critical. Backup generators would likely need to be part of the solution.

I was skeptical it could ever happen because it would cut out the utility companies and the transition would be difficult as those still relying on the grid would see costs skyrocket. Multi-story buildings would be a problem if solar is the technology, so I wasn't sure the grid could ever be eliminated. In some cases cities may need to have their own grid.

Since I first envisioned local power generation, EVs have come on the scene. I'm not sure local solar generation has enough capacity to charge multiple EVs that a household may have. Also geothermal HVAC systems, while highly efficient, add to the residential electrical load. I'm not sure solar can capture enough energy for all that, but I haven't really tried to do the math to see if next generation panels can get there.

The author C.J. Box. A recommendation to read his works.

Stumbled across one of his "Joe Pickett" books in a local "little free library" a few months back.
I am hooked. There are 24 books (so far) in the Joe Pickett series. Basically, a mystery murder series of books.
"Joe" is a game warden in Wyoming , some describe as a "Dudley Do right" who repeatedly stumbles across crime scenes or gets mixed up in bureaucratic red tape with his superiors in Government, the FBI, and his local Sheriff dept.
He has a hot wife, who makes 4 times what he does, and they have 3 daughters who live with them in a State-owned house in a game warden district in northern Wyoming.
C. J. Box does an excellent job of in his novels of incorporating and mentioning and describing many places thru out Wyoming, South Dakota, and Montana that I have been too many times myself.
Some of the books have held my interest more so than others, but that is the way it goes with any book series, imo.
Have read 8 of the 24 books so far. They are in order, so I suggest a start with Book number 1, "Open Season".
There was a 2-year series on Paramount+ about the exploits of "Joe Pickett", but I have not watched any of those, as I hear they vary dramatically from the books.

FOOTBALL ***RELEASE: Easton Dean Invited To Tennessee Titans Rookie Minicamp***

Identity Alert Question

I received notice that my SS Number may have been compromised. The alert states, "We found a match to your Social Security Number on the dark web. While this information doesn't necessarily mean you are a victim of identity theft, you may be at risk."

This is from ProtectMyID, of which I have membership via AAA.

Diving in further, ProtectMyID suggests I set up a Fraud Alert with Experian. By doing this, I need to give a lot of personal information, including my SS #, of which I'm hesitant to do.

I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts or experience with this, and/or any suggestions of someone I should talk to (thinking of asking my bank if they have any suggestions).

Thank you in advance.

Are we about to blow up (knock on wood)?

I'm a Cyclone fan, so I know what happens when we start getting stars in the eyes, thinking we're going to have a special season. But is this the year the stars align? We have a young football team that went to a bowl game last year and return nearly 90 percent of that production on both sides of the ball.

We return our top 4 scorers in basketball and add several more pieces in an area of need, the interior. Most prognosticators have us ranked in the top 5 in the country and one even has us at No. 1.

In women's basketball, prognosticators have us in the top 10 and we have one of the most dynamic post players in the country entering her sophomore year in Audi Crooks and another soph who is not far behind in Brown. Plus we return our leader, Emily Ryan and add some sharpshooters on the perimeter in the Marquette and TCU transfers, both of whom hit around 40 percent of their threes last year.

I'm probably playing with fire here, but the way I see it, we have three chances for this to be our year, a year for a championship, any kind of championship, a year Charlie Brown actually gets to kick the ball. How many other years could we say that?

FOOTBALL ***RELEASE: Ben Nikkel Signs With Washington Commanders***

Iowa State Media Relations

Defensive back Ben Nikkel, a former walk-on, has signed with the Washington Commanders. He wowed teams with an impressive performance at Big 12 Pro Day in Frisco, Texas at the end of March. The McPherson, Kansas, native, started his playing career as a wide receiver at McPherson College before coming to Iowa State as a walk-on in 2021.

After redshirting his initial season, Nikkel switched over from the offensive side of the ball to the defensive backfield and saw action in all 12 games as a special teams standout in 2022.

Prior to the 2023 season, ISU head coach Matt Campbell awarded Nikkel with a scholarship and his value to the program was recognized by his teammates, who voted him a co-captain. He finished the 2024 season with 40 tackles and was second on the team with eight special teams stops. He also scooped up a blocked punt against TCU.

Nikkel played in 24 career games and making 43 tackles.

I'm glad I was finally able to do something with the great interview I did with Kayden on the NCAA Tournament trail last month.
