Four returning starters? See you next season.

Lipsy, MM, both Presidents.

Need a shooter, a ball handler, a Chatfield / BRE. I trust Otz will find them in the portal even with ISUs low-ball NIL. Or as freshmen.

If you told me five years ago the Cyclone basketball team would go to four NCAA tourneys in the next four years, I'd have doubted you and been overjoyed. Disappointed today. Delighted overall.

As always, YMMV.

I expect an NCAA appearance next year, too.

BASKETBALL ***RELEASE: Crooks Tabbed WBCA All-America Regional Finalist***

Iowa State Media Relations

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State sophomore Audi Crooks has been named one of 50 finalists for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-America team. It is the second time in her career that she has been named a finalist for the 10-person team.

Crooks led Iowa State and the Big 12 Conference in scoring this season, averaging 23.4 points per game while shooting 60.5 percent from the floor. She set Iowa State single-season records for points and made field goals with 820 and 329, respectively. In the regular season finale against then-No. 14 Kansas State, Crooks dropped a season-high 36 points on 14-of-18 shooting from the floor. It marked her fifth of six games shooting over 75 percent from the floor this season. She also finished 8-of-11 (.727) from the free throw line in the contest and pulled down 10 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the year. Crooks finished 24 of 35 games with 20-plus points and six games with 30-plus. Along with her top marks in points and field goals, she also posted Iowa State sophomore top-five marks in rebounds (261) and free throws (162).

The Algona native was named a Third Team All-America selection last week by both the Associated Press and USBWA. Crooks is the first Cyclone sophomore to be named to an All-America team by either outlet. She is also a top five finalist for the Lisa Leslie Center of the Year award, the first ever at Iowa State.

The promising season in four sports that fizzled ... mostly

I posted a thread in the middle of football season when we were ranked in the top 10, as were the men's and women's basketball teams and the wrestling team, speculating on whether this could be a championship season for one or all of them. My how things have changed. The only team that came close to living up to that lofty expectation was the football team, which at least played in a championship game.

The injury bug played the biggest role in the disappointment, for the most part, but maybe there were some unreasonable expectations, or over-rating in the polls going on, too. All four teams suffered from injuries, but they had the biggest impact on the three men's teams, IMO. I'm not sure the women would have done any better if Hare had played the whole season. The football team was able to overcome those injuries better than the other two, but I have to believe they still had an impact on the season when you lose your top three LBs and several of their backups.

Good thing I keep a good supply of nut cups on hand, is all I can say, because we sure needed them this year.

The 2020 Fab Four WBB Recruits near the end

ISUs 2020 recruiting class is nearing its collegiate end, with all four at separate schools that made the tournament this year.

Emily the forever true Cyclone - wrapped up in the First Round with the loss to Michigan.

Kylie the traitor Hawkeye - season came to an end today with a loss to OU. Note, she may have a medical redshirt if she chooses.

Aubrey the Joens sister - gets to continue riding the OU bench with their win over her hometown EIU.

Lexi the last to bail - returns to the Sweet 16 with UNCs win today over West Virginia.

Going Forward….

When will the average age of a college athlete return to normal? We’ve had this 5-year COVID situation going on forever, it seems. Is next year the final year for extended eligibility?

I actually thought that was supposed to be this year, but am seeing numerous older players planning on returning next season.

Good luck!

Should college athlete earnings be made public?

Coleman Hawkins doesn’t think so. He said as much from his home in California. From the KC Star.

He committed to the Wildcats in June, and the value of his lucrative NIL deal was shared openly minutes afterward.

“At the time, Hawkins said he could handle the publicity. Opposing fans loved to heckle him when he was in the Big Ten, and he often used their words as fuel during games.

But it was difficult for him to do the same in Manhattan. Turns out, hearing people say “he’s not worth that” wasn’t easy for him to deal with.”

This guy is well into his 20s, but younger players are going to have to face this reality too as they basically become college pros. Making more than their parents will ever earn and from a school where the kids they go to class with are going into debt while living on Ramen noodles.
