Gabe Kalscheur had this to say about being one of four returners on head coach TJ Otzelberger's second team as head coach...
Kalscheur on what his first season at Iowa State was like:
“I had a lot of fun. The community of Ames is remarkable. Everyone is just so bought in. Hilton Magic is real magic. Just the team we had and the run we did, it was a lot of fun, from a 2-22 the year before that and bringing it to the Sweet 16 run, that was just remarkable. I had a lot of fun.”
Kalscheur on the factors that led into that NCAA Tournament run:
“Daily habits. Really, just the work habits and trust put into our coaches. How much they bought into us and we bought into them. Waking up early, staying up late. Just gelling together as a team. Last year, we had a lot of transfers and new guys. This year, we’re kind of in the same thing again, with transfers and new freshmen. We’re just gelling together and having a family. We preach that. Coach breaks it down and is tough, but it’s a family. We stick by that.”
Kalscheur on his approach with the newcomers as one of the returning guys:
“Just lead by example, show the work ethic I’ve continue to put in. They see that and do the same thing. Jaren (Holmes) is a hard worker and I love playing with him, shooting as well. These are some great guys that have experienced a lot and are vets, too. They’ve played at St. Bonaventure in a tough league, played in the NIT and in tough leagues. They know what it takes.
“With the freshmen coming in, just showing them that it’s going to be some hard times and could be some good times and pushing through all that. Just know that we have each other’s backs. Just leaving it all on the floor. Whatever happens, happens.”
Kalscheur on what it’s like playing in Hilton Coliseum:
“It’s going to give you energy, electricity, day in and day out, night in and night out. You’re going to have a full-packed game in front of a full-packed house. We pour into that floor and the fans pour into us. If it’s a rival game, if it’s not a rival game, they’re going to pour into us. It’s amazing. You’ve got to experience it to believe it.”
