FOOTBALL ***RELEASE: Bacon Named to Lombardi Award Midseason Watch List

Iowa State Media Relations

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State redshirt sophomore linebacker Caleb Bacon has been named to the 2023 Lombardi Award Midseason Watch List.

The Lombardi Award is given to a lineman, on either offense or defense, or a linebacker that sets up no further than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage.

Bacon, who hails from Lake Mills, Iowa, is fourth on the team with 29 tackles, while leading the team with 5.5 tackles for a loss. He has notched 2.0 sacks and has five quarterback hurries in his first season as a significant contributor on defense. Bacon also plays a significant role on special teams for the Cyclones.

The Cyclone defensive unit ranks second in the Big 12 Conference in total defense (329.3 yards per game), second in passing defense (198.1) and third in scoring defense (20.0).

In the last two games, ISU has held its Big 12 opponents to 12.0 points per game and 156.0 passing yards per game, while intercepting six passes.

BCMoore computer rankings

I'm a big follower of the BCMoore computer rankings. He is a guy from Gilbert that has Sagarin like ratings, and probably more known for rating Iowa High School football. And it is pretty darn accurate after you get about 5 games into a season.

But he also rates college football. Interesting stuff after Saturday's games. Here's his computer's take on our college football world.
ISU is now ranked #33 in the country (Iowa is #31). We are #7 in the Big 12 (14)
ISU is now favored in its next 3 games by 14, 3, and 4 points. And are now 17 and 10 point dogs to Texass and KSU respectively.

ISU underperformed by 11, 9, 10, 2 and 2 in its first 5 games, and overperformed by 15 and 17 points in its last 2 games. To that, the last 2 games, ISU has performed at a level of the #8 team in the country. That is the stat that really catches my eye.

Of course, computers don't play games, but good stuff none the less. HERE is the link, if you want to dig in more.

Fake FG

I have watched the replay twice, and Matt Cambell was not happy with OL Simmons. He made what I would categorize as a get in the way block. And it looked like his guy either made the tackle or forced Contreraz inside to the guy who made the tackle. He (Matt) was unhappy for a play that looked to be a huge success.

ISU WBB: Who saw this coming?

So, it looks like Kelsey Joens may be a front runner for a starting guard position. With all the accolades of the incoming class, plus a high-scoring guard transfer, I thought Joens would be the last one to see playing time. Also, it appears that Joens has been playing the point, because of the Ryan injury but Arianna Jackson, a more natural PG, is also injured. BF said Kelsey was the team's second leading rebounder on their Italian trip and he praised her work ethic, saying she's the hardest working player on the team, which all sounds like she's being talked up to start.

FOOTBALL ***RELEASE: Contreraz Tabbed Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week***

Iowa State Media Relations

AMES, Iowa – Chase Contreraz has been named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. It is Contreraz’s second Big 12 weekly honor of the season and he is the only player in the league to be recognized for the special teams award twice.

Contreraz played a vital role in Iowa State’s 30-10 road victory over Cincinnati on Saturday. The Missouri Valley, Iowa native was 3-for-3 on field goal attempts – hitting twice from 30 yards out and once from 34 yards.

The senior also converted a critical fake field goal attempt with a six-yard rush up the middle on a drive that would eventually end as a Cyclone touchdown. It was Iowa State’s first rushing attempt by an upperclassman this season.

Contreraz was also 3-of-3 in the game on point-after attempts.

Iowa State is on bye this week - the Cyclones are back in action Oct. 28 at Baylor.
