Cyclone Soccer starts conference slate with a 1-0 win at KU!

It was a back and forth game. Very physical game. The KU coach at halftime was upset. He told the announcers that he told his team playing tough was NOT fouling. They had 12 at the half.

ISU scored with about 5 minutes left. It was a chip shot from about 20 yards out that bounced off and over the KU goalies hands and in. She was playing a bit off the line and that was her undoing.

It was ISU's only shot on goal, but that's all they needed. They took KU out of their "play fast" game plan by not pressing and forcing them to take the ball through the midfield. There were some close chances in the last 2 minutes for KU, but ISU defenders were up to the take.

The Cyclones will be back at home on Sunday at 1 PM for the next match up in the Cyhawk series. Admission is free!

CBS Sports has Iowa State in CFP

CBS Sports has put Iowa State and three other Big XII schools in the CFP.

No way the Big XII get four teams in, but it's good talking fodder for the next two weeks.

By the way, Konrardy will be in the NFL at some point. That kick was clutch and would have been good from 64.

There was also an article about how hot Campbell would be if he wins 9 or more games this year.

Conundrum

I literally left the game (on my TV) after Rocco's pick. At my age and with some health issues I let it be way too stressful for me. The first quarter was almost over, we had almost 0 yards of offense, no first downs and were outgained by nearly 100 yards. More importantly, we were being physically manhandled and making mental mistakes and looked unprepared for the big stage.

Obviously things changed. I will watch the replay to comment on how, but that is not my conundrum. That is do I now quit watching as good luck?

I can't hate iowa anymore

Yesterday cemented it for me.

Grew up hating them. Chris Street's death started to change my mind.

As I previously posted, I attended a cousin's surprise 60th birthday party in Malcom. After the game ended, I was talking to one of his niece's. She asked me "You know why I'm a hawkeye fan?" I had no idea, but no one in the family came close to going to college, let alone Iowa. "When I was little, I had a bad stutter. I went there for therapy, and they FIXED me!"

That hit me hard. Given my inability to control my emotions as I get older (everything seems yo make me tear up), I'm surprised I held it together. I told her "The next time I see that they win, I'm gonna smile, because I know it makes you happy."

I can't hate them any more.

Except for wrestling. @#$% them, @#$% their team, @#$% their psycho fans.

One last thing: Shout out to the Pour House Bar and Grill in Malcom. Cyclone fan owner. Recently remodeled. Watched the first half there. Full of hawk fans, but she was throwing out the hawkeye jokes at them the whole time!

FOOTBALL ***RELEASE: Becht Named in Manning Award’s Stars of the Week***

Iowa State Media Relations

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht has been given one of the Manning Award’s eight Stars of the Week.

College football fans can follow the Manning Award on social media (@ManningAward) to vote for what they think was the best performance from this past weekend. After voting closes on Wednesday at 9 a.m. (Central), the top vote-getter will be announced as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week.

Becht led Iowa State to a 20-19 comeback victory at No. 21 Iowa Saturday. The Cyclones trailed 13-0 at halftime, and 19-7 with less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter, but left with their second consecutive win in Kinnick Stadium.

Becht started the game 11-of-19 for only 72 yards and an interception but finished 12-of-16 for 200 yards and two touchdowns to engineer the comeback. His final stat line read 23-of-35 for 272 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

After Iowa scored a touchdown to take a 19-7 lead late in the third quarter, Becht found Jaylin Noel on the next play for a 75-yard touchdown pass to pull ISU back to within f
ive points. It was Iowa State’s second-longest play against Iowa since 1971.

The Cyclone offense got the ball back one final time trailing 19-17 and the Wesley Chapel, Fla. native delivered a critical 30-yard completion to Noel with 29 seconds to go to set up the game-winning 54-yard field goal.

Iowa State is off with a bye this weekend but returns to Jack Trice Stadium against Arkansas State on Sept. 21 at 1 p.m.

Some Thoughts

Watching the hawk fans turn a whiter shade of pale as Konrardy's kick split the uprights is a life highlight.
It was simply beautiful.

I screamed "Yes! Yes! Yes!" maybe a hundred times. My throat is still sore.

I was happy about much of our play even when we sucked.
Much more physical than we have been recently versus Iowa.
They didn't move much. Just got us in the wrong gaps for their back too many times.
Dom had a great game.
Brezina is a stud . Yes let Brezina be Brezina. That's pretty damn good. He's our best backer.
I've been calling Porter a pro for some time.Think more believe me tonight.
He moved up draft boards today;Got on new ones.
Remarkable play catching their back as the backside corner. Their RB had no idea where he came from.
Kid is fast . Ran the 400 in the 46s in high school as I recall.

Ellis played well. Loved the TV guys talk about his grandpa. (HWT champion of the World Jimmy Ellis)

Both coaches made some curious decisions and time management.
Iowa did it worse. And chased points. You deserve to lose chasing points.
I was cussing Matt at the end. But it turned out he saved enough time.

Interesting that they drew up the 75 yard TD pass on the sidelines. Keep doing that.
Turns out we are pretty damn good.

It was one helluva game.
May not be a better one anywhere this year. I'd say that if we missed the kick.
Just brutal hitting.

Sama has came so far in getting physical.

Iowa needs a QB.
Pussy arm.
Can't get it to the end zone from midfield. Pathetic really.
Pretty damn good team otherwise.

We did a helluva job on their TE,

Cyclone Football reaches new milestone in Iowa City.

It's not just ISU beat Iowa which is monumental any time it happens. It's the way the Cyclones won that speaks to the character of this team and the special leadership Rocco is providing as the QB.

What we witnessed today was a team that kept battling and kept believing and eventually found a way to get it done. High pressure and high stakes in a hostile environment plus high level TV exposure and these guys found a way. As the confidence skyrockets we'll no doubt see repeat performamces. Will be fun to watch!
