Mouser may have more on his plate than he can handle. Campbell has had a pattern at ISU of hiring OCs with no OC experience.

The plan was Candle, who got the Toledo HC job. So Manning was hired. No experience as an OC, but good reputation as OL coach. Result was less than satisfactory OC and OL coach performance. He left for a NFL job as TE coach. I forget who replaced him as OC, so I can't say if he was experienced or not. Manning came back as OL coach and OC. His experience as an OC was all at ISU. He installed, effectively, a TE oriented offense that was good with Kolar, Allen, and the big guy. (Name escapes me.) Functioned pretty well in 2022 and 2021. 2022 was a disaster and Manning moved on.

Scheelhaase, again no OC experience, replaced him and after a slow start, went 6-3 down the stretch but was plucked by the NFL as a "rising talent." Enter Mouser, again with no OC experience.

The results are mixed. The numbers are good. The record, despite our disappointment with Tech is very good at 7-1. But we are frustrated as fans by the inconsistency. Lots of yards and not enough scoring. And TE play, a strength last year, has been below average. So a couple of questions come to mind.

1. Is the TE just a function of the injuries to Brahmer and Klotz or is the coaching slipping as he struggles to master the OC duties? I don't know, but it is a legitimate question.

2. Is his inexperience causing a lack of reaction to defensive adjustments?

3. Or is it just injuries, known or unknown, that keep the offense from being as productive as it needs to be?

We've had 2 bad games, UCF and Tech. Won one lost one in the final seconds.
Ohio State barely escaped Nebraska. Miami got lucky against Virginia and Cal. Clemson pretty easily handled by Louisville tonight. South Carolina manhandled A&M. Louisville and South Carolina no better than Tech, at least record wise. How far will Clemson and A&M fall?

I happened to read a CBS Sports article, and included in it was a comment that Simpson University had lost to Montana State 97-0. Apparently their first year in big time football. I thought to myself, “this couldn’t be Simpson College they’re talking about, right?”

Turns out there is a Simpson University in California. It was 43-0 after the first quarter and the yardage total for the game was something like 663-30. Maybe Jamie could schedule them down the road so we could look more dominant in our first game…

Getting worse and worse by the week. Personnel and play calls.

Both of them will be snoozers. Both opponents only won one game last year. The men's opponent, Mississippi Valley State, was 1-30, while Chicago State was 1-27.

1. The injuries have narrowed the margin of error considerably. How ISU has tried to play given the available personnel now has hours of tape. It's up to the staff to continue to add wrinkles. With a smaller margin of error, execution becomes even more important. Have to believe nicked up running backs and no Ben Brahmer have made a significant impact on preventing teams from stunting nonstop. The other tight ends playing are not viable receiving threats.
2. Obviously the story on the defense is the linebacking corp....well, that and the predictable opening drive touchdown. This side of the ball has been surprisingly effective in view of the personnel, but like the offense, hours of tape reveal how to attack it.
3. The staff knows what needs to be fixed and the best ways to address the problems. Do they have the available personnel to consistently do the job? Jury is still out.
4. I don't pay attention to rankings, until the last few weeks of the CFP rankings. The '99-'00 basketball season taught me the only thing that matters is the next game. That's it. Everything else sorts itself out.
5. Coaches & players make mistakes...Cyclones & opponents, but they still know infinitely more than I do from the stands or my recliner.
