The electric grid is going to be under some serious strain, even without electric cars.

In the last couple months, 2 huge data centers have started construction in Cedar Rapids. The first one is from Google and will cost 550M. Now a 2nd mystery company has started construction of data center right next to the Google Data center, and it will cost 750M. I have done some research on these data centers, and basically they are gigantic electric guzzlers as the major infrastructure of these data centers is Air Conditioning. They are surrounded by huge freezing/air-conditioning units. They are coming to Iowa and Cedar Rapids because we have cheap electricity and it is available (currently). These 2 data centers will cover over 2 square miles of land, and each site has about 30 acres (my estimate) devoted to just the electrical substations they need to build.

So I am thinking that we now have all these data centers being built all across the country in direct competition for electricity that the EV's will need, and I don't think that is going to end well. Then I see Microsoft is planning to start building AI centers, which make data centers look small. They have in the works their first AI center (don't know where), that will cost 100B to build, and it will require 6 GW of electricity to run. Considering that a nuclear power plant on average is 1 GW of power, each of these AI centers will require the equivalent of 6 nuclear power plants. That is crazy!

Seems to me that we have major grid problems coming that will crash the EV market even worse than it already is crashing.

A word of caution....

The last time Iowa State was 5-0 was 1980. That year Iowa State played nobody ranked above 60th in the power ratings in the first five games, Iowa being the best at 60th.

Then the Cyclones played 40th ranked Kansas on the road and lost. The rest of Iowa State's schedule included all but two top-40 teams and ended up 6-5.

Point....Iowa State's schedule was front end loaded with low ranked opponents. The 5-0 record was fool's gold.

This year.....

Every team that Iowa State has played this year is sub-50 except ...Iowa. Other than Iowa, Baylor is the highest ranked team we have played to date. Just like 1980, our schedule has been remarkably front end loaded with easy teams (except Iowa).

The Cyclones now play 40th power rated West Virginia on the road. Exactly the same as Kansas in 1980.

The rest of Iowa State's schedule includes 6 of the top-7 teams on our strength of schedule, with UCF being the only sub-40 opponent we have yet to play.

Things are different under Campbell than Duncan for sure. But I'm tellin' ya......Iowa State was set up for the opportunity to go 5-0.....and the rest of the schedule is set to be one grueling week after week fight. Just like 1980.

The Mountaineers with home field advantage comes in at a 20th power ranked equivalent, and feeling pretty confident themselves.

This is one mother of a challenge for Campell and his team...a lot more so than a lot of fans are appreciating right now.

(In my opinion.)

Remaining Big 12 football schedules

Starting to look at remaining schedules for all of the 0 or 1 loss Big 12 teams. I think BYU, Texas Tech, and Kstate have the most favorable schedules left in addition to us. Of course I love ISU's chances to get to Big 12 championship game with 4/6 home games remaining and one of those games neutral at worst. Plus we get Texas Tech and Kstate at home. I think Arizona State, Cincy, Colorado, and WVU all have a minimum of 2 losses left on their schedule and finish no better than 6-3 in the conference. At this point I will be surprised if a 2 loss team makes the Big 12 championship game. We also can't afford to lose any of our remaining home games. We need the tiebreakers over TT and Kstate. If we were going to lose one game, make it @ Utah. I think we could survive that loss and still make the Big 12 championship game and keep our playoff hopes very much alive.

Good ISU segment on GameDay

It’s roughly at the 20 minute mark. Sabin said our team has a winning identity. He really likes Rocco and said he’ll get lots of recognition as the year goes on. Howard quoted our impressive defensive stats. Herbie was complementary and thought we would win tonight. Pat McAfee is a Mountaineer and mentioned that Anthony Becht was as well.

Worth watching if you have it recorded.
