Interesting read about potential future of conferences

I just skimmed it and covers a lot of angles from potential future private equity interest to why Yormark would be interested in UCONN and a lot in between.

Taking a trip?

I'm kind of half-assed looking at traveling to Thailand this winter. I've always wanted to go to Thailand (1) because it's so cheap to live there and (2) I absolutely love Thai food and Thai street food looks even more amazing.

The big problem for me is flying. No, I'm not afraid of flying, I'm afraid of the seating. I'm a big guy. Economy class seating is no good for me and business class is too damned expensive. First class? Forget about it. I was looking at Economy premium seating and that seems more reasonable price wise, but are the leg room and seats really as advertised? I saw somewhere that the leg room is like 7 inches more and the seats are slightly wider. Or would it just be cheaper to buy two economy class seats side by side (do they charge a premium for seats that are side by side? Is that even doable?).

I'll probably never end up going anyway because I'm just so darned lazy, but it's nice to dream, isn't it?

News Flash from the Left Coast

With the conference realignments leaving UC-Berkeley and Stanford by their lonesome, Governor Gavin Newsome has announced the formation of the new California Conference. With USC and UCLA gone, the remaining 24 Division I schools in the state are mandated to be in the new conference, or be forced to operate all classes by Zoom. Among the other highlights.

- Newsome will appoint her Senate replacement.
- All team mascots must be a plant
- All teams must travel by electric vehicle.
- Every team in every sport is required to have at least on transgender athlete on scholarship
- Every team in every sport must have at least one undocumented immigrant on scholarship.
- No school may schedule an athletic event against a Big 12 school.
- All teams will boycott states that have abortion restrictions.
- National Anthem will be replaced by a gay pride anthem of each school’s choice.
- All black athletes participating in the conference will be paid reparations.
- Law enforcement will not be allowed inside the athletic venues.
- Sociology majors will be on hand to get to the root causes of any conflicts.
- All fences will be left open at all times.
- During off-seasons, athletic venues will be used as housing or encampments for the homeless and undocumented migrants.
- All concessions will be grab and run.
- No champions will be crowned, but every participant will be awarded a rainbow ribbon.

Big 12 Rivalries weekend?

We set up for rivalries on the last weekend or 2 to draw TV interest.
  1. BYU/UU
  2. UA/ASU
  3. KSU/ISU
  4. CU/KU
  5. WVU/UC
  6. OSU/TECH
  7. BAYLOR/TCU
  8. UH/UCF
Figure names with appropriate trophies. Othe rivalries that need to be annually honored include, but not limited to, ISU/OSU, KU/KSU, Baylor/Houston, TCU/Tech and if any PAC rivalries exist, honor those as well. The more legitimate rivalries that exist, the more it adds to season games.

Rose Bowl Fun Facts

I could have sworn I remembered Arizona having played in the Rose Bowl 20-30 years ago, so I did some Rose Bowl research.

It was actually Arizona State who played in 1987 and 1997. They beat Michigan in '87 (22-15). ASU's coach was none other than our own John Cooper.

ASU lost to Ohio State in 1997 (20-17). Bruce Snyder was the coach that year.

And the funnest Rose Bowl fact of all that I discovered: Over the past 70 years, only one team has been shut out in the Rose Bowl. May I introduce you to your "not-quite-ready-for prime-time" 1982 Iowa Hawkeyes, who got skunked 28-0 by Washington.

Was that the game Ronnie Harmon suddenly had butter fingers and fumbled 4 times?
