Iowa State Media Relations

NASSAU, Bahamas – It was another strong defensive performance for the Iowa State men’s basketball team Monday, as the Cyclones beat BC Zalgiris Kaunas 78-52 at the Imperial Ballroom.

Iowa State jumped out to a 9-1 lead in less than three minutes and never trailed in the contest. Iowa State led 22-9 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 46-29 at the half. “Really proud of the way our guys started the game,” Iowa State Head Coach T.J. Otzelberger said. “We knew this team would be physical based on their first two games here this week. It’s always our goal to be the more aggressive team.”

Tre King led the Cyclones with 14 points, while Keshon Gilbert and Tamin Lipsey each had 12. Milan Momcilovic joined them in double figures with 10 points. Demarion Watson had five rebounds, while Omaha Biliew, Gilbert and Momcilovic each had four. Jackson Paveletzke had a game-high five assists, while Gilbert and Lipsey each had four. Gilbert had five steals, while King and Lipsey each had two. Ward blocked a pair of shots.

“I was happy with our balanced scoring attack, but even more impressed with three different guys having four or more assists each,” Otzelberger said.

Iowa State will play its final game on Wednesday against members of the Puerto Rico National Team. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CT). A link for live stats is available on Iowa State Men’s Basketball social media sites.

George Conditt

Just watched most of the replay of the Puerto Rico vs USA bball game. A high level game for 3 qtrs and my goodness was I ever shocked by Conditt's play. Not enough time to evaluate his defense, but his offense, passing, rebounding, quickness and hustle was much much better than anything i saw at ISU. Late bloomer i guess. His bball future may be looking up. Wish him the best.

PSA for those close to a Fareway. Meat sale

Fareway Grocery Stores (not the Fareway Meat Market) has short loins for $7.99 lb this week. Fantastic deal for that cut of meat which you get about 6 Porterhouse and 7 T-bones. They range about 24 lbs (you have to buy the whole loin) and can be cut to any thickness. I got two loins cut at 1-1/2“ and split them with the kids and a couple friends. Call ahead with the thickness and how you want it packaged (I get 2 per package to freeze but they would do 1 per) and they will have it waiting for you. They do this about once a year.

Nostalgic Listening

I just came in from yardwork and needed to relax. I am a huge music fan and have been since forever. While having a cooling beer I listened to Led Zeplin Houses of the Holy. What a masterpiece! I loved it and I recall it from it my days in Helser in 1974. Also a huge fan of Queen 1 (USA release). They no longer make music like this commercially. Share your favorite albums for days gone by...

Clone Fest Beer

Anyone try the Festbier lager Clone Fest yet (the beer from Backpocket Brewing that benefits ISU programs, but NOT the We Will Collevtive)? I got some at Hy Vee in Grimes today. I heard it was at Fareway in Bondurant, so it must be getting around. I’ll give it try Friday. It was in RAGBRI and will be at the craft beer tent at the state fair. The link above shows the retail outlets and bars that are supposed to get it.

The Cyclones held an 18-12 lead after the opening quarter and pushed the lead to 35-26 at the half. Iowa State opened the second half on a 19-3 run, extending the lead to 54-29. Puerto Rico answered with a run of its own, cutting the lead to 59-41 going into the fourth quarter. Puerto Rico held a 25-20 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Recruiting

It will be interesting to see how the realignment will change the lands of recruiting. ISU being as far North has a disadvantage with some of the top states due to distance. Texas is loaded with talent but how over picked will it be? Face it, SEC and BIG 10 are going to be dropping millions into Texas for NIL.

Is California a better route? It shows Texas and California are the two states with the most NFL players produced. I like that Campbell has been setting up connections in Kansas City and Minnesota. He does a great job and sneaking in a few Ohio kids as well. I’m just curious how it will change since the 4 schools are going to start targeting Texas a little harder now they aren’t in the PAC-12 where Texas could give two hoots.

BASKETBALL ***RELEASE: Cyclones to Visit the Bahamas This Summer***

Iowa State Media Relations

AMES, Iowa –The Iowa State men’s basketball team will be competing in the Bahamas this summer for a foreign trip, spending six nights and seven days at the Atlantis Paradise Resort. The Cyclones will play three games against international competition at the Imperial Ballroom, the home of the annual Battle 4 Atlantis each November.

“We are thrilled with the opportunity to play three challenging opponents during our time in the Bahamas,” head coach T.J. Otzelberger said. “The trip will provide us with quality games against international teams preparing for the FIBA World Cup. It will also help our team grow closer as we start our journey to next season.”

The trip will take place Aug. 4-10, with games played on three of the days. Iowa State will face the Bahamas Select Team on Aug. 6, Zalgiris-2 (Lithuania) on Aug. 7 and Obras Basket (Argentina) to close the trip on Aug. 9. The first two games will be played at 12 p.m. (CT), while the final game will tipoff at 1 p.m. (CT).

Iowa State will be making a summer trip for the fifth time in program history. Previously, the Cyclones have traveled to Mexico (2004), Italy (2011 & 2019) and Spain (2015).

Football season is upon us.

I’m anxiously awaiting Bill’s season predictions as I really have no idea to even predict the final record for this year. I do know one thing, to get more recruiting classes like last year, they need to make some noise to show promise. I think last season is the reason this years class may not be as strong. Have to win the close games and make Jack Trice home field advantage again.

Not my father's RCA...

I was surfing Best Buy's web site tonight for a new TV. The Samsung I bought for $500 two years ago lasted 14 months.

I ran across a nice Samsung 110" model, a Class Micro LED 4K Smart Tizen. Cost is $149,999.99.

I wonder if delivery to west Ames is extra? I'm not one to just freely throw money around.

For anyone interested in a nice gift for the family....Dad always told me you get what you pay for:

Can you imagine the road trips for Stanford's 40+ Olympic sports?

Stanford basically wanted to have nothing to do with the Truck Stop conference. They obviously can not stand the people in flyover country. So they now end up in a conference were basically every road meet in all their Olympic sports (hear they have the most) will for the most part require a 2500 to 3000 mile road trip. It will absolutely suck to be on any of their sports teams. All because they believe they are better than us flyover people.

Has to be a nightmare to the green movement at Stanford, think how huge their carbon footprint will now be with all that flying. LOL!
