Ames Lager

I am sitting in the comfort of my condo, drink my first Ames Lager. We have a winner. This is a good tasting beer. I should have let it cool a little longer, but I couldn't wait to sample it.

I also bought some Clone Fest yesterday. I went to Cyclone Liquors to buy Ames Lager, but they were sold out. They said HyVee was also sold out. So Clone Fest was my consolation prize. Cyclone Liquors got another shipment today and I snagged a case. I think there were only a half dozen cases left.

I may sample a Clone Fest after I finish the Ames Lager. But I may do that while tailgating before the volleyball game tonight.

From Fire To Ice

I like to hang out in my three seasons room in Cedar Rapids. I've got see-through sun blocking shades, a fan to pull cold air from the air-conditioned home and a window HVAC unit for temperature control. Despite the high temperatures outside, it can be comfortable in here. The air conditioning unit isn't required much until the sun starts getting lower in the western sky and can avoid the shade trees that protect this room during most of the day. It can get warm in here late in the day.

This morning I come out in my gym shorts to a freezing room. How could this weather go from Hades to the Ice Age in such a short time? It was so cold out here I had to turn the HVAC to heat for a bit just to take the chill out. That seems ridiculous, but I'm not going back in to put on some long pants and a sweatshirt.

This may bode well for temperatures on Saturday. But this morning, it's chilly.

RIP Gary Wright

Most know him as the Dream Weaver.
I only listened to his work in one of the greatest rock bands ever.
Spooky Tooth.
Mick Jones, Mike Harrison , Luther Grosvenor (Ariel Bender).
A super band.
Here are a few selections.
They got back together and toured some early in this century until Harrison died.
Here are some selections.

My favorite version of "I am The Walrus".

JP Apology Letter

I had zero issues yesterday, but for those who did, maybe this will help.

Dear Cyclone Fans:

Thank you for cheering on the Cyclones to a season-opening win over UNI yesterday! Your support of our student-athletes, coaches and staff is greatly appreciated, and helps create a tremendous home field advantage.

Our goal is to provide you with an outstanding game-day experience every time that you enter Jack Trice Stadium. Unfortunately, we did not live up to that standard yesterday.

After successfully piloting 20 turnstile scanners at Gate 2 a year ago, the decision was made to expand their use this season to Gates 1 and 3. Unfortunately, the combination of many fans arriving closer to kickoff, our staff’s inability to help fans understand the technology, and the excessive heat, came together to create a perfect storm of poor customer service.

Please accept my apology for the inconveniences we caused for many of you yesterday. We do appreciate your understanding and patience as we work through improvements for this week’s game.

Go Cyclones!

12 quick bullets on what I noticed when rewatching the UNI game.

On the rewatch, I was much more impressed with the overall play of the offense. Couple notes...in 12 bullets:
1) Rocco is a clear number one. Everything seems to flow better with him at QB and his quick release is/will be a big advantage against strong pass rush teams. He places the ball well, though he overthrew 2 open passes deep...chalk that up to first game adrenalin rush. I think Kohl is going to be great, but he needs a year to learn and grow.
2) Abu Sama is a going to be VERY good. He learned a lesson or two about dancing around and not taking the yards available...but he's got natural vision and a just plain wicked burst. Not going to compare anyone to Breece but this kid has similar speed with bit more shake. Doesn't have the power and patience yet but that may come with time. I would add that Norton looked damn good as well and Norton/Sama is gong to be a nice combo for a while. Nothing against Sanders, he's solid but in my mind he's a definite 3rd option.
3) Caleb Bacon....where'd that guy come from?!?!?! Fast and takes nice angles...have to see if he can grow into a starter down the road but he's going to be fun to watch on a few plays every game.
4) Sadowsky took a couple of bad angles but that's just a matter of adjustment...still figuring out where to be in coverage as well...he's fast and has great size. Will be fun to watch him grow into that middle slot.
5) Orange is a beast...endurance is going to be the only issue. Paired up with Onyedim we have a surprisingly strong pass rushing duo in the middle. That's important because nothing hoses up a QB's pocket like pressure up the middle.
6) TE's as good as advertised. Brahmer showed really nice speed on that TD play...he's going to hurt some people this season and you ain't covering him with a Linebacker.
7) Verdon looked great...some nice hits and was in the right place a LOT.
8) Secondary overall is the best I've ever seen at Iowa State, and that goes back to the great secondaries of the 70's.
9) I actually forgot how quickly we jumped out to 30-0 lead...by early 3rd quarter. That's actually more impressive than anyone seems to be saying at this point. In seasons we run up the score like that on UNI, we are generally a solid team.
10) WR's were not especially impressive but we didn't really go to them all that much...which is fine. Would like to see Higgins targeted more, as he looks like he knows what to do after the catch.
11) We do have a couple keys guys that we simply cannot afford to have injuries. That's worrisome.
12) I'm a cock-eyed optimist and a complete amateur at analysis, so be kind.

New Parking Lot Feature

I drove by the new lots last weekend. The lines are painted in the D-lots. As you may recall they are no longer diagonal parking spots, but instead perpendicular to the aisle. The rows appear to be spaced further apart.

What I saw may put a smile on some faces and frowns on others. There are a new set of red lines behind the spaces that define the boundary for your tailgating. It allows the aisle to stay clear for cars driving down the aisle. They appeared to give adequate room for normal tailgating, but it's hard to judge without cars parked and tents and tables set up behind the cars. I suppose the big tailgate setups with long vehicles could be a problem for those folks unless they have a group parked side-by-side together, which would be nice.

Whether you like it or not, I think the lines are a great idea. It is a real pain in the rear for late arrivers that aren't able to drive down the aisle to park. In my lot with my large turning radius vehicle, I wouldn't be able to get in my spot if I came late. It would be difficult even if no one were tailgating in the aisle. But I think the spacing in 85E is less than what it appeared to be in the new lots.

I predict a fair amount of bitching to take place after the first game. Even if more people approve than disapprove the complainers are always the most vocal. For those people, just buy a few extra Ames Lagers to enhance your miserable tailgating experience. 😉
