The rest of the season....?

Negative......
You can make a good argument that we aren't going to win another game. Next week is huge. Look at the schedule and try to honestly find a game we are likely to win. Dropped passes, no running game, no deep passing threat. Future looks good in the long run, but not this year.

Positive.......
Defense is excellent. Gave up a couple of big plays yesterday, but generally played very well....and that was with our best DB playing limited snaps and our only experienced linebacker not playing at all. Special teams are much improved. That highly questionable PI call on Iowa's only TD drive was a killer.

Overall.....

I'm thinking 4-8 or 3-9. The schedule is a bitch. Most of the weaker opponents are played on the road, and aren't that weak, anyway.

Breaking Down the Offense

If we are going to win enough to go bowling (5 of the remaining 10 games) we have to get better on offense. Captain Obvious speaking.

Best building blocks:
  • Brahmer
  • Tight Ends in general
  • Higgins
  • Norton/Sama
Deficits:
  • Other Wide Receivers
  • One guard position on offensive line
  • Experience
Neutrals:
  • Other 4 positions on the offensive line
  • Quarterback- good head for game, generally takes care of ball, very weak power 5 arm, inexperience
Our offensive philosophy is to hang around and win late. To be successful we need to get ahead and force the other team to take chances. We aren't built to win late.

Thoughts

Frustrating loss. Very Frustrating.

We do not have any gamebreakers on offense. Yet.

Our offensive line is not better, again yet.

Noel had a horrible game. Perhaps the worst thing was not fielding the punt off the bounce. That cost us at least 20 yards of field positin and a minute plus off the clock.

Rocco will be okay, but the deep ball will always be a challenge for him. He is a below average P5 deep thrower.

Which doesn't matter much, since we have no deep burners to throw to. I would split Brahmer 6-7 yards with Klotz/Burkle in a wing slot, Higgins split the other way off the los. And Dean/Moore tight. Base formation as those are our best players. Did Moore play today?

Defense is starting to get dinged up.Looked like Tampa may have a concussion.

I don't like zone blocking.we are VERY poor at cutting off the backside.

The last drive 3rd down was the key. We tried short twice on 3rd and 4th and 1. Horrible calls. Worse execution.

Their offensive line was just a smidgen better than ours. Mostly they were more aggressive.

In Other News, UNI Losses at Home

Damon Bankston rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns and Weber State’s defense pitched a shutout in the second half, leading the Wildcats to a 34-17 victory over Northern Iowa.

The Next Pro QB from an Iowa School Theo Day was 23 of 41 passing for 312 yards with one touchdown for Northern Iowa (0-2). However, he was intercepted three times, all in the second half.

Northern Iowa’s longest possession of the second half lasted six plays and ended in an interception.

“You can’t hide (six) turnovers. Plain and simple,” UNI coach Mark Farley said. “It was the big plays (given up) on defense. Then, of course, the (six) turnovers signed our ticket.”

Weber State, ranked No. 9 in FCS, outgained the Panthers 390 yards to 358.

A couple pictures

My try at inserting pictures. Just a couple plays. One is on a 3rd and 9 at about the 11:30 mark left in the first half. It's a 3rd and 9 and Rocco threw underneath to Noel who surprisingly caught it but was short. Iowa's safety must have been in man coverage because he took off and was completely out of the picture. Look how open Brahmer was with the separation. Sometimes the call was good but our freshman QB missed the read. 2nd one is for people who didn't think Higgins was held in the end zone. Sorry for the quality but I just paused the screen and took a picture with my phone while watching the replay this morning.

Injuries?

Not that we will ever know for sure, but what injuries did you notice. Most concerning to me was Tampa who appeared to be concussed after the hit on a running play and did not come back in.

With Vaughn out, that is a lot of leadership missing. Does anyone know what Vaughn's injury is?

Anything else you picked up on?

Officiating

Pass interference called on ISU was close, The hit on Higgins’s in the end zone was early. Cost is points.
Moving the ball prior to the snap on the first field goal disrupted the kicker. Never seen that before.
Rocco was hit late on a couple of throws.
Iowa with several holds at the point of attack.
Delay of game called, but changed to a time out.
I believe Iowa had 1 penalty.

Ok all of the refs apologist tell me how good of game this team called today.

***RELEASE: McFarland Clinic To Anchor CYTown Development***

Iowa State Media Relations

AMES, Iowa -- McFarland Clinic, Iowa's largest physician-owned multi-specialty clinic, has agreed to become the first tenant in CYTown, Iowa State University's multi-use district currently under construction between Jack Trice Stadium and the Iowa State Center.

"We are grateful for the leadership of the McFarland Clinic Board of Directors and Andrew Perry, CEO, for coming alongside Iowa State University to partner on this transformative project for Central Iowa," said Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard. "McFarland made history as one of Iowa's first multi-specialty clinics when it first opened its doors some 80 years ago, and we believe its support of CYTown will be equally impactful for the campus community, Ames and Central Iowa for future generations."

McFarland Clinic is expected to break ground on an anticipated 60,000-square foot multi-level medical facility adjacent to the north entrance of Jack Trice Stadium in the summer of 2024. It will be the first building developed as part of the university's new 40-acre multi-use district, which was publicly announced in September 2022, and saw construction start in March 2023.

"This partnership is a win-win-win for ISU, McFarland and the communities we serve. This is a convenient location within the city of Ames and helps us fulfill several strategic priorities by improving access to care and opening up additional space for recruitment of new Story County physicians," said Perry. "We are proud to support CYTown, the university and the economic impact it will have with retail and entertainment offerings."

McFarland Clinic at CYTown will offer primary and specialty care as well as urgent care. CYTown is conveniently located on campus for ISU faculty, staff and students and accessible by major thoroughfares for patients in and outside of Ames.

When finalized, formal agreements between McFarland Clinic and Iowa State University are subject to approval from the State of Iowa's Board of Regents.

"The clinic will provide our student-athletes convenient access to orthopedic services including imaging equipment not currently available on campus," Pollard added. "It will also complement our health center by providing after hours and weekend services. We are thrilled to welcome McFarland Clinic to CYTown."

ISU President Wendy Wintersteen added, "We are pleased to partner with McFarland Clinic as the first tenant in CYTown. The new medical facility will be a shining example of the innovative approach Iowa State University is taking to enhance our athletics, arts and conference complex."

McFarland Clinic's outstanding reputation and the number of individuals receiving care and services in this area will help attract additional businesses to CYTown. It also helps jump-start ISU's plans to reimagine the Iowa State Center.

"Similar to Dr. (James H.) Hilton's vision for the Iowa State Center that has impacted the Iowa State and Ames communities for more than 50 years, we believe CYTown will have a similar impact for future generations," Pollard said.

The university plans to use the revenues generated from CYTown to fund long-needed refurbishments to C.Y. Stephens Auditorium, Fisher Theater, Scheman Building, James H. Hilton Coliseum and the surrounding parking lots. The university also anticipates adding a convention center and hotel that will be accessible for use by the Ames Convention and Visitors Bureau to attract additional conventions and trade shows that will provide year-round benefits to local hotels, restaurants and the City of Ames.

"McFarland has a great history of leadership and selecting locations that play a pivotal role in our community" said Rick Sanders, ISU Research Park President. "Their physician owners invested in our research park at a crucial time in our development and likewise are taking a leadership position in CYTown. We look forward to working with them on integrating the McFarland experience into our Iowa State ecosystem."
