Bowl projections once again fun to check out

With a couple Big 12 wins in a row, Iowa State has started to pop up on a few of these lists.

Iowa State vs. Texas State in the Armed Forces Bowl.

Iowa State vs. Colorado in the Independence Bowl.

Cyclones HOF

I just got done watching the 2023 ISU hall of fame ceremony on cyclones.com. It was held the night before the OSU game. If you are old enough to remember Hercle Ivy and Mike Strachan, like I am, its a treat. These guys are just so appreciative and funny. Strachan especially. Betsy Saina's story is heartwarming. She's only 33 years old, had just won the Sydney marathon and is training to represent the USA in the 2026 Olympics. The ceremony is well done.

Chase Contreraz mention in the Athletic (sub required)

"K Chase Contreraz, Iowa State: Contreraz began his career at Iowa Western Community College, was a walk-on at Nebraska for three years and transferred to prove what he can do at Iowa State. He converted a 56-yarder in his season debut and has made 12 of 16 field-goal tries with six makes from 40-plus yards. He also converted a fake field goal with a 6-yard run to set up a touchdown in a win over Cincinnati."

FOOTBALL ***RELEASE: Bacon Named to Lombardi Award Midseason Watch List

Iowa State Media Relations

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State redshirt sophomore linebacker Caleb Bacon has been named to the 2023 Lombardi Award Midseason Watch List.

The Lombardi Award is given to a lineman, on either offense or defense, or a linebacker that sets up no further than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage.

Bacon, who hails from Lake Mills, Iowa, is fourth on the team with 29 tackles, while leading the team with 5.5 tackles for a loss. He has notched 2.0 sacks and has five quarterback hurries in his first season as a significant contributor on defense. Bacon also plays a significant role on special teams for the Cyclones.

The Cyclone defensive unit ranks second in the Big 12 Conference in total defense (329.3 yards per game), second in passing defense (198.1) and third in scoring defense (20.0).

In the last two games, ISU has held its Big 12 opponents to 12.0 points per game and 156.0 passing yards per game, while intercepting six passes.

BCMoore computer rankings

I'm a big follower of the BCMoore computer rankings. He is a guy from Gilbert that has Sagarin like ratings, and probably more known for rating Iowa High School football. And it is pretty darn accurate after you get about 5 games into a season.

But he also rates college football. Interesting stuff after Saturday's games. Here's his computer's take on our college football world.
ISU is now ranked #33 in the country (Iowa is #31). We are #7 in the Big 12 (14)
ISU is now favored in its next 3 games by 14, 3, and 4 points. And are now 17 and 10 point dogs to Texass and KSU respectively.

ISU underperformed by 11, 9, 10, 2 and 2 in its first 5 games, and overperformed by 15 and 17 points in its last 2 games. To that, the last 2 games, ISU has performed at a level of the #8 team in the country. That is the stat that really catches my eye.

Of course, computers don't play games, but good stuff none the less. HERE is the link, if you want to dig in more.
