I love Fred coaching ISU basketball as much as anybody, I respect what he has accomplished here, and will always remember the great wins and big 12 tournament championships( I attended this years and had a tremendous time). But lets make an assumption that Fred wants a NBA job and is going to take one either this year or next. Which time frame do you think would be better for ISU?
As much as it pains me to say this, I say leave now for several reasons. Everybody thinks the returning roster is final four bound if Fred stays. Maybe, but we don't know that. Hire the right coach, they still could be, maybe their chances go up, who knows. But which scenario helps ISU attract a big name up coming coach that has a chance to continue building on what Fred has done. Coming to a loaded roster that has a chance to do great things right away and give your recruiting a great boost? Or having next years team do whatever they do with Fred as coach, be it just a really good year or even a fabulous year, but then have a depleted roster returning for the new coach, who would have to bring some really good players to even be competitive that first year?
