Well...here we go again with a faceoff between content providers and service providers. In this case it is Disney vs Google with the consumer stuck in the middle as usual.

The details are that if there is no agreement by midnight December 17th, youtube.tv subscribers likely will lose access to Disney/ESPN channels. I am guessing it would be a short lived outage, but ya never know (see sinclair broadcasting regional sports channels for example of a long running feud with various TV providers)

Here are the channels that could be missing by this weekend:
  • Local ABC channel
  • ABC News Live
  • Disney Channel
  • Disney Junior
  • Disney XD
  • Freeform
  • FX
  • FXX
  • FXM
  • National Geographic
  • National Geographic Wild
  • ESPN
  • ESPN2
  • ESPN3 (by authentication to the ESPN app)
  • ESPNU
  • ESPNEWS
  • SEC Network
Unfortunately an ESPN+ subscription does not give you the content from the main ESPN channels without a TV provider verification.

If this lingers into bowl season, I might have to look into some temp options with the main ones being Hulu (7 day trial), DirecTV, FubuTV, Sling. I've stuck with youtube.tv since launch and thru multiple price increases, but not sure how long I'd stick with them with no ESPN content during college bball season. (note: they are reducing the subscription price by $15 per month for the duration of any outage of those channels...it's an interesting strategy, but still...rah.)
