AMES, Iowa – Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht has earned a spot in the Davey O’Brien QB Class of 2024 and is officially in the running for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.

Becht has been outstanding leading the Cyclone offense this season, paving the way for ISU’s first 7-0 start since 1938. Through seven games, Becht has thrown for 1,712 yards and 11 touchdowns and is completing passes at a 61.3% clip.

The Wesley Chapel, Fla. native has thrown a touchdown pass in 11-straight games dating back to last season and has thrown for 250-plus yards in five games this season, including three straight. Becht has also made good use of his feet to extend plays and pick up key first downs on the ground. He has four rushing touchdowns this season.

Still just a sophomore, Becht has been at his best when it’s mattered most this season, delivering two game-winning drives when ISU has gotten the ball trailing with less than two minutes remaining in the game.

At No. 21 Iowa, Becht marched the Cyclones 42 yards in 0:28 to set up a game-winning field goal with 0:06 left. Becht came through in crunch time once again against UCF when he led the Cyclones on an 11-play, 80-yard touchdown drive in 1:18, capped by a quarterback sneak with 0:30 remaining in the game.

No. 11 Iowa State is back in action Saturday, Nov. 2 at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN when they host Texas Tech for homecoming.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Iowa State junior point guard Tamin Lipsey has been named to the NABC National Player of the Year Preseason Watch List, the organization announced on Wednesday.

Lipsey is one of five players from the Big 12 named to the 20-member watch list. Earlier this week, Lipsey was named to the 20-person Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Watch List and the 50-member Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy Player of the Year Watch List.

A returning AP Honorable Mention All-American, Lipsey was a finalist for the Naismith National Defensive Player of the Year, the Lefty Driesell Defensive Player of the Year and the Lute Olson National Player of the Year awards last season.

Lipsey also got it done in the classroom, being named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America Team. He was also selected to the Big 12 Championship All-Tournament team after leading the Cyclones to their sixth Big 12 Championship. He was also named an NABC First Team All-District selection, named to the All-Big 12 First Team and Big 12 All-Defensive Team last season.

Lipsey averaged 12.4 points, 4.9 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 2.7 steals in his sophomore campaign. He was one of 17 players in the country, and the first in Big 12 history, to average those numbers since 1996-97. Lipsey had a school-record steal streak of 34-straight games snapped this season. It was the second longest streak in the country. He has a steal in 66 of the 69 games he has played.

Because of the huge demand that will be coming from Data Centers, Duane Arnold is probably going to be recommissioned after improvements. Was shut down "permanently" a few years ago, but the demand for electricity is going to be so great, they need to bring it back.

So much for electric cars! The data centers are going to make charging an electric car pretty difficult. The grid will likely struggle just to keep up with the data centers.

I just found out that my sister was the Sunday school teacher for Rylan Barnes' father and my nephew was friends with the father. The nephew was also a classmate of Caden Matson's father. This was in Buffalo Center, I believe, but they also lived in Algona for awhile.

The punt block for a TD has turned my Nebraska-loving nephew into an Iowa State fan. He lives in Omaha now, so it's sort of understandable.

AMES, Iowa – Sophomore Addy Brown was named to the Katrina McClain Power Forward of the Year Watchlist on Thursday as Iowa State’s second representative among the Naismith Starting 5 Awards. Brown was one of Iowa State’s most well-rounded players as a freshman, finishing last season with 10 double-doubles.

The Derby, Kansas became the only player in program history and one of two Power 5 women’s players in 2023-24 to record at least 400 points, 250 rebounds and 150 assists in a single season. Her efforts earned her All-Big 12 Honorable Mention and a spot on the conference’s All-Freshman team. Brown holds Iowa State’s second-best marks by a freshman for season field goals (164), assists (159) and rebounds (269) and third-best season point total (429). Her 10 double-doubles were the most by a Cyclone freshman. She narrowly missed the program’s fourth-ever triple-double, finishing with 16 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists against North Dakota State (Dec. 10, 2023).

Iowa State will officially open the regular season Monday morning against Chicago State. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m. in Hilton Coliseum.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State will honor former Cyclone and Olympic Gold Medalist Tyrese Haliburton on Saturday, March 1, during Iowa State’s game against Arizona. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at sold-out Hilton Coliseum.

With Haliburton and his family in attendance, Iowa State will honor him with a halftime ceremony that will include his banner being dropped as an Olympic Gold Medalist. Haliburton is the eighth Cyclone to win a Gold Medal at the Olympics and the first in men’s basketball.

The first two-time NBA All-Star in Iowa State history, Haliburton was one of five Cyclones who played men’s basketball in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The five Cyclones playing in the Olympics was the second-most of any program in the country.

Haliburton and Team USA earned the eighth Gold Medal of the professional era for the United States, while it was the fifth-straight Olympic Games that Team USA brought home the gold.

Playing in just 22 games before suffering a season-ending injury in 2019-20, Haliburton earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors. He also earned all-district honors from USBWA and NABC, while being named a finalist for the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award. When his season ended, he was sixth in the Big 12 in scoring (15.2), second in FG percentage (50.4), first in assists (6.5), first in steals (2.5), second in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.3), third in 3FG percentage (41.9) and 13th in rebounding (5.9).

Haliburton is in his fifth NBA season, including his third with the Indiana Pacers. He finished third in NBA Rookie of the Year voting in 2021 and was named to the All-NBA Third Team in 2024. He led the league in assists with 10.9 per game last season.

AMES, Iowa – The sophomore dynamic duo of Addy Brown and Audi Crooks were recipients of preseason honors from The Athletic. Crooks was named a Preseason Second-Team All-American while Brown was tabbed the outlet’s Preseason Breakout Player of the Year.

Crooks has also earned Preseason All-Big 12 and Preseason AP All-America Honorable Mention accolades ahead of the 2024-25 season. The Algona, Iowa native averaged 19.2 points and 7.2 rebounds as a true freshman last season while recording the highest usage rate in the Big 12. She broke several Iowa State freshman records including points, made field goals and made free throws in a season. Her 258 made field goals also broke the all-time Cyclone single-season record.

Brown had one of the most well-rounded seasons in program history as a freshman. The Derby, Kansas native is the only player in program history to record 400 points, 250 rebounds and 150 assists in a season. She was also one of only two players in a Power 5 conference last season to reach the feat. Also a threat from beyond the arc, Brown cashed in 52 triples while shooting over 38 percent from 3-point range. She earned Big 12 All-Freshman Team accolades following the conclusion of the 2023-24 regular season.

So I did a blood donation today. Life Serve Blood Center is a participant in a contest by Abbott Labs, where they will give a blood donor free tix to the B10 football championship game, and then $1 million dollars to the winning school of choice. B12 teams are not an option.

So I thought what the heck, I will enter. I chose Purdue, because F the Hawks and they seem the most like ISU, good engineering school, shaky football history, good basketball history.

So if you had a million dollars to give, and had to give it to a B10 school, who would you give it to? Rivals limits to 8 choices, so I split some, that are kind of divergent. But I left the two biggest ISU Rivals by themselves, if per chance anyone would choose them. What say you?
