HVAC Inspection Question

I know we had some HVAC guys on here in the past. I'd like to know how often an HVAC system should be inspected and if there is any difference in the importance of inspections between natural gas, geothermal and electric heat systems.

It seems the HVAC companies will make the same recommendation without regard to furnace type. Once or twice a year. The heating system in the fall and the air conditioning system in the spring is a typical recommendation or money grab. I'm not sure which. My call to a local company was answered by a guy that seemed to know less about HVAC systems than me.

Natural Gas Furnace

I can understand having a natural gas furnace checked each year. With fire, gas and the potential for dangerous carbon monoxide gas, it seems there is more risk of something bad that can go wrong.

All-Electric Furnace

But what about an electric furnace like I have in my condo? It seems like it's either working or it's not. Is it any less likely to fail if it's inspected? What is there to inspect? I don't have annual inspection of my electric stove, electric fireplace or the PTAC unit in my three-season porch. When it breaks I get it fixed or replaced.

Geothermal System

I also have a geothermal system at home. It is a bit more complex than an all-electric furnace. I have had that periodically inspected, but I haven't felt the need to do that on an annual basis as long as it's working the way it should. I maintain the filter and periodically clean out the condensate tray and install some condensate tablets every couple of months in the summer. (Reminder to self: It's time to do that.)

Condensate Trays

Speaking of condensate trays - is it common to have to clean and use condensate tables in these things? It is absolute necessary in my geothermal unit. It doesn't seem to drain well as it's too flat and it can get clogged with mold and mildew in a relatively short period of time. I have to clean the tray, use a brush to clean the drain pipes and put some condensate tablets in the tray. I need to do this every couple of months in the cooling season. It seems like a design problem to me with the frequency that it needs maintained.

I also have a condensate tray in my all-electric unit in the condo, and while I couldn't get a really good look inside the unit, I saw no evidence of leaking or a plugged system and I've had the condo for a few years without having it cleaned or inspected. From what I could tell it appears this system basically never needs cleaned. Maybe that's a bit of a stretch, but from what I could see it looked clean inside. I couldn't tell if it had a clean-out access port and I didn't want to break what looked like it could be a pull out plug for cleaning.

I've never even thought about cleaning or inspecting the condensate tray in my PTAC unit. Heck, I just had the unit apart and gave it a good cleaning and didn't even notice a condensate tray.

FOOTBALL ***Big 12 Media Days: Wednesday edition***

I've just arrived in Arlington after a long day on the road from central Iowa. I'll be on hand for both days at AT&T Stadium. Although Iowa State won't be on hand until Thursday, tomorrow will be newsworthy with Brett Yormark addressing the contingent at around Noon. He'll be followed on the main stage by head coaches from TCU, Houston, Kansas, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Texas, and BYU. I'll be posting highlights in the thread below, beginning with Yormark.

Niang Will Double His Money

While no Tyrese contract, I see Georges will slightly more than double his first seven years’ earnings in the NBA ($12.385 million) with his new three-year, $26 million contract with Cleveland. His average annual earnings has also increased each year. Not a bad living! If he invests wisely and normally, he’s set for life.

Strange Stuff Falling From The Sky

A nice morning rain in Ames. We got about 1/2 inch in the last hour. It looks like the heavy stuff has passed through, so might not get much more in this system, but it sounds like there may be more in store this weekend. Much needed.

I think we need it more in Cedar Rapids. Unfortunately this first wave looks like it's going north. The lawn could use a drink. I came back from Ames last weekend after about a 10 day stay. The lawn was in need of a haircut in shady places. So I start up the mower but it would stall out when I tried to throttle up. I didn't have time to mess with it, so I called the dealer to come pick it up and service it. They picked it up Thursday morning and I may not get it back for a week to ten days. We got a little rain mid-week which probably held off some areas from going dormant. If we get some rain this weekend, the lawn is going to be looking pretty shaggy by the time I get it back.

And some say we aren’t a communist country.

We have a shooter!

Jackson Paveletzke was one of the ISU players that came down for "Cyclone Sundays" at the Cap City League last night.

We had an impromptu three point shooting contest between him, Keshon Gilbert, Hason Ward and Tre King.

I get that it was a casual thing, no defense, whatever but still impressive to see a guy make 11 in a row with little or no warm up. He got 24 our of 30 possible points.

Tre said "we got some guys that can put it in the basket this year." What a novel concept! He and Hason both got in the 14-16 out of 30 possible points range - not bad for "big guys". This feels like it could be a fun year!
