Coaching cycle

I feel like Iowa State has a shelf life for coaches. The past coaches poured their hearts and souls into the program and eventually hit a wall. Could it be how difficult it is to be a cycone football coach where it just wears a man down? In the past 25 years the facilities, talent, victories, and fan support has boomed from the previous 25 years before. Its taken many armies and leaders to do it.

Not trying to get into a sarcastic battle, just watching CU and my mind can't get away from today's game. That loss wasn't just a nut kick, it has my manhood twisted into a knot.

WTF? Pleasant surprise

I have been DVRing old Judge Judy episodes for years, including during this prolonged dispute DirecTV has with my local channels. Every night, I hit play on them and every night for the last four months, a disclaimer has popped up detailing the dispute and I delete them all ... except for tonight. There are my old Judge Judy's, all four of them. The stupid dispute is over and I can finally watch Judge Judy again and college football on my local Fox, CBS and NBC stations. Miracles never cease.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Setting venue attendance records across seven stadium shows this summer, country music icon George Strait and eight-time GRAMMY winner Chris Stapleton continue the excitement into 2024 with nine new dates. Also returning alongside the King of Country and Stapleton for the extended run of one-off stadium dates are special guests and GRAMMY Award-winning band Little Big Town.

In addition to summer shows in Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Ames, Charlotte, East Rutherford, Salt Lake City, Detroit and Chicago, Strait will also supersize his longstanding Strait to Vegas show with a December date at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium to mark the 37th installment of the engagement.

Tickets to most shows go on sale next Friday, Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. local time via GeorgeStrait.com, with tickets to the Jacksonville show on sale Friday, Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. local time. American Express® Card Members can purchase tickets before the general public beginning Friday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. local time through Thursday, Sept. 21 at 10 p.m. local time.

Of the few opportunities to see Strait perform live, Pollstar opines, “Strait remains the most worthy inheritor of Merle Haggard or Willie Nelson’s mantle of country icon through the meaningful fluidity with which he moves through country’s various sub-strains with the same ease and enjoyment that marked both men’s Country Music Hall of Fame careers.”

“I’ve always said we have the best fans in the world, and to see so many of them show up for these shows just makes us want to keep bringing them more,” shares Strait. “I’ve also missed performing in Las Vegas during NFR, so I’m happy to see that show come together in 2024. See you soon!”

Beer Question: football coach

A table of Cyclone fans killed three beers this weekend trying to answer one question:

If (I said IF) we were to replace Matt C in the next couple of years, is the program in a better place to hire someone to move us forward than the last few coaching hires?

Easy answer (3 of 4) said yes - given new program and conference stability in a Major P5 Conference. Also cited better facilities and CyTown development. Bigger stadium/more revenue.

Some concerns slowed the roll : 1) NIL - we likely can’t compete economically with a good number of top programs to pay players. 2) if consolidation isn’t over and there are ultimately two Mega conferences of top 40 programs, we may not make cut. 3) relative lack of football tradition.

Hopefully we won’t need a new coach but interesting Q.

Today

I'm looking forward to see how our Cyclones respond.

On paper we "should" win. But (no kidding) this is why you play the games.

I don't know how "hostile" an environment it will be, but I fully expect Ohio to be a tough-nosed team looking for a trophy to hang on their wall.

So what are we going to do? I have every confidence in Heacock to have a great game plan. Offensively I really hope we can establish the run better than these first two games. Rocco starts his 3rd college game. Given his level of game experience, I think overall he's done well his first two. Hoping the line takes a big step forward. Lets make some lanes for the RB's. Let's not drop the passes today. Hoping today is not a game where we hang on the execution of our special teams. Not being critical at all of ST play, but let's take care of it in the other two phases so we don't need to rely on it to pull one out.

I guess Captain Obvious is saying I hope we do what I think we can and should do. Perhaps I need more joe to change my "hopes" into expectations?

What do you guys think?

A Few Comments

The good news.
A couple inches of glorious rain kept me from seeing the second half. DISH fade.
The bad news.
I had my radio on.

For those they disliked last weeks' refs??
These were much worse.

We are a AA development team this year.
I've accepted that.
Coached like that from the opening kickoff.

Bad when a MAC team has a better OL than a Big 12 one.
No idea why we insist on running the ball.
WE can't.
I suspect we tip runs.
It is worse than logical incompetence.

We can do some run and shoot stuff and score.
Head coach just isn't into that.

You have my blessing to drink heavily.
Have a couple for me.

I'm going to enjoy other games.
Strangely enjoyed Mevis 61 yard kick to beat KSU.
I can't say either team is impressive.
And I hate Misery.

Things I Found Out (I Think)

We have totally failed to recruit offensive talent. Slow and weak is no chance today. Particularly slow.

The gambling losses may have doomed us. I still remember reports from spring that said Dekkers was #1 and it was not close. And the others hurt as well.

The coaching is not a magic elixir. I don't know if it is better, but results are not indicitive it is.

Last time we lost to a MAC team in Ohio, it was the beginning of the end for Rhoads.

Someone compared this to Walden. Walden never had an offense this poor - except maybe the year he got fired.
