Defense Question

I understand our reasoning for the 3 man defense. However, with less pure air raid/tempo offenses, it seems we ought to at least have some 4 man front alternatives. We have built our DT base, particularly as we use the DE (Oneyedim type). A series with Orange, Singleton, Oneyedim alternating at 2 spots at DT and Petersen, Ezeogu, Jones, etc. Alternating at DE. It would help with safety depth and simplify LB responsibility, both good things this time of year.

It just seems having a secondary/alternative defense would be advantageous.

The Olde Brick House Pub

Went there for a late lunch today. Opened a couple of months ago. It's a small chain -- four of them in Minnesota and now Iowa.

I'm linking a story from the Gazette that gives details and background.

Menu is really interesting and different and the food we had was great -- a term I don't use lightly.

Mrs. LC had two appetizers -- Scotch eggs and steamed mussels. The latter was a pound of perfectly cooked, large mussels in a beer poaching liquid, came with excellent bread. $15.

I had the bangers and mash -- Sausage served on mashed potatoes with creamed cabbage and a side of smashed peas. On the lunch menu (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) it's $10.99 and on the dinner menu (you get more) $16.

A 20-oz pour of Guinness is $7.

We definitely will be going back. I want to try their fish and chips and their corned beef and cabbage.

My only criticism is a serious nitpick. They have shepherd's pie on the menu, but technically, it's cottage pie. Both are ground meat, vegetables in gravy, topped with mashed potatoes and stuck in the oven until browned. The difference is that shepherd's pie is lamb and cottage pie is beef. As I said, a nitpick.

I guess I gave the Texas AD the horns down sign

I sit on the aisle between section 5 and 6. Its the steps that Jamie comes up between the 1st and 2nd qtrs. every game. 5 or 10 minutes before kickoff, this really well dressed Texan, full colors, and BIG hat comes up the aisle as many patrons are coming down. When he got to me I told him he was swimming up stream, while flashing the horns down sign. Tonight i got to wondering who that guy might be and took a guess. Sure enough, it was this guy

Catt Hall Retains Its Name

I didn't keep up with this controversy to really understand what it was all about from her drive for women's voting rights over a century ago. I read the review committee's report and think I understand how her decades long focus to win these rights for women may have led to her being labeled a racist a century later. I doubt this controversy goes away, but I think her accomplishments deserve recognition and not so sure the racist criticisms that stain her legacy are totally fair given what she was trying to accomplish.

ISU MBB Ranked #6 by TeamRanking.com

I know it is early and for entertainment, but TeamRanking has ISU #6 in the country. Even at #6, that means ISU finishes in 3rd in Big 12. Looking at Present and future members of the conference, than 50% of the TOP 10 is Big 12:

1 Arizona
3 Kansas
4 Houston
6 Iowa State
9 BYU

Big 12 is going to be killer in basketball in the future.

Several stories today about Big 12/Gonzaga talks are heating up again, and a decision yet this year is expected.

SIAP-Impressed With Student Section

This may have been discussed in the game thread, but I was impressed with the student section last night. From my perspective in Section E, the student section looked completely full. With the students already on break, I expected the upper deck to be mostly empty but it was not. I remember games over Thanksgiving break in past years that were poorly attended by students. Maybe next Saturday would have been worse. Too bad the outcome wasn’t different to give the students more to celebrate.
