Mike Williams, a member of the Earle Bruce era teams and a terrific running back and one half of the W W Express (Mike and Jim Wingender) lost his battle with MRSA yesterday at a Hospital in Atlanta, where he was being cared for by his daughter Amber. Mike broke his foot several weeks ago, and following surgery, developed a bad infection which turned septic. They amputated his left leg below the knee, but he just couldn’t fight off the infection. Eventually it turned into MRSA, and there was really nothing else that could be done. He entered in-patient hospice a couple days ago, and passed on last night.
I know some of you knew Mike (we called him “Hollywood”), and know what a great guy he was. Very upbeat, an active member of FCA, and a great friend and teammate. He was poised for a breakout senior season in 1976 after gaining almost 800 yards his junior year. In the final full scrimmage prior to the first game with Drake, Mike made a cut on the astroturf field. His knee dislocated, and his career was finished. He was destined to be an NFL running back, but nerve damage in his leg prevented that from happening.
If you would like to help his daughter Amber with the hospital expenses, or read more about Mike’s battle, there is a GoFundMe account at:
