I was curious as to Toledo's offense and defense this past season under CMC so I watched the condensed replay of ISU-Toledo. Here is a summary of the offensive sets from that game:
100% Shotgun
1 snap with 2 split RBs
Approximately 60% of the remaining snaps had 1 RB and 40% with a RB and H-Back.
Never ran the Zone Read against ISU. QB Ely had only 25 rush attempts all season.
Will be interesting to see how Lanning is utilized if he is the starter. Justice Hansen is the JUCO QB being recruited and he is definitely an Ely type but he did have one game with 150 yards rushing. If the Ohio Co-OC (Scott Isphording) is hired, it should be noted that his QB had nearly 100 rushing attempts during the season and was more of a dual threat.
Defensively, John Walters called the Toledo defense a 4-2-5 but 50 of the snaps had 3 DL with a hand on the ground and 30 of the snaps had only 2 interior DL with a hand on the ground. I am thinking that CMC and the new DC will stick with the 3-4 as the base defense. Should be noted that Toledo had the most success in the MAC defending BGSU's Art Briles offense the past two seasons.
