Might be off topic, but Mike is so well known throughout Iowa and the Midwest, that I posted the news here.
Mike passed away just a couple hours ago. Mike was a long time track starter official. He worked many Drake Relays thru the years, as well as many State XC meets. Going back a long ways, but he worked many of the HS track meets I ran in 40+ years ago.
He was indirectly a mentor and a supporter to my daughter in her HS running days and also the last few years as she coached in SWI.
I last talked to him in early December at an awards banquet in Ames. I have a sneaking suspicion he was the ramrod behind the award my daughter received that day.
Behind his large body and gruff exterior was a big old teddy bear that escaped quite often.
Gonna miss you Mike. You will forever have the best view of the track, and the XC course.
