Okay western Iowans...I've been wondering this for some time now.

I had reason to drive around western Iowa on Saturday...Anthon is a beautiful destination this time of year. The only downside was I had to listen to the Nebraska spring game on the radio for any sports station with decent reception. Was fun to see all the new little calves enjoying sunshine out on the hillsides. I also learned how to drive to Climbing Hill.

Anyway, for years I've noticed that many of the paved roads from about Carroll on west have a red tint to them. Why is that? It's something you don't see in other parts of the state.

Does a red road mean it needs more tax money before it's paid for? Or maybe that I'm driving through a Republican County (which would be true in most cases ;)).

Can someone help me out here?
