Going back to the thread on rail travel, Amtrak through Iowa, etc. earlier this week--there's a rare chance to see Amtrak's California Zephyr travel through Ames once and maybe twice today.
Because of flooding in Missouri, it's been re-routed and is taking the Union Pacific line across Iowa. As of about 3:20 p.m., the eastbound train (#6) is in western Iowa traveling east. The westbound (#5) would be through this evening--although there's a chance it could be canceled. Also, these trains will/would go across the Kate Shelly bridge out by Boone
You can go to Amtrak.com, and click on "Track a Train" for live updates.
No word yet on tomorrow or beyond, but there's a chance it could be detoured for a few days...tomorrow seems like a strong possibility.
(This is causing havoc in Galesburg, a big railroad town, as this weekend is Galesburg's Railroad Days, and a number of trains are being re-routed that would have normally gone through Galesburg.)
If I get an update on the westbound, will post later.
