After a mid-December unofficial visit spurred his first scholarship offer, a Missouri prep defensive end has been keeping closer tabs on the Iowa State program.

Jefferson City junior Corey Suttle said his trip to Ames last month for a bowl practice took a surprising turn when he was called into head coach Matt Campbell’s office.

“I wasn’t even expecting it,” said Suttle. “I was expecting to just look at the campus and get a feel for it. The offer just really came out of nowhere. He said he loved what I saw of my film. I didn’t know they had that much interest.

“I’m pretty excited and we’re still staying in touch. I was trying to get back up there, but my schedule isn’t working out too well. I’m about to go into track, so I don’t know when I’ll be able to go back up there. I’d love too, though.”

Aside from the conversation with Campbell, the 6-foot-4, 240-pound Suttle said he enjoyed everything else he saw during his day at ISU.

“When we first got there, I got to see the weight room which is incredible,” he said. “It’s probably the biggest weight room I’ve seen. They’ve got machines I’ve never seen before. They got my weight. I got to see the indoor facility, like the training room. I got to see the indoor field, which was cool. Their practices are kind of like ours, but theirs is more intense and I like that. I was excited to see that.”

Suttle said that the Cyclone staff was drawn to what he brings to the table as a defensive end.

“The defense I run at my high school is basically the same they run up there,” he said. “It’s a 3-4 and they can switch back to a 4-3. They move the defense around. They like my effort and that I play the game with passion.”

During ISU’s breakout 8-5 season under second-year head coach Campbell, Suttle said he really started taking notice during the win over Oklahoma. That interest piqued after the offer and carried through the Liberty Bowl victory.

“The first time I really watched them was Oklahoma,” he said. “My coach talked about how they went down and no one thought they could beat Oklahoma with a third-string quarterback. That was incredible all around. After that, I started watching more and more.

“Since I got the offer, I’ve been keeping up with the team. I watched their bowl game, which was amazing. In that game, (J.D. Waggoner) was just a beast. My mom actually went down to go see it, but I couldn’t because I had school.”
