What does it say about ISU if Fred leaves and we offer the job to an assistant, with no HC experience? Now I am the first to admit that I don't know what it takes fully to be a successful Division 1 coach. I doubt anyone else who posts on this board does either.
However, we fancy ourselves as a top-tier, top 20 type of program. If that is true, why the hell would we turn it over to an untested assistant. As was pointed out in an earlier thread, it is not 5 years ago. If Kansas or Texas had this type of situation and their coach went to the NBA, do you think they would give it to their assistant? If we do, it says to me that ISU is only a player in our minds and not on the real stage of Top level college basketball.
