A Michigan prep linebacker in the Class of 2019 recent picked up an offer from Iowa State, which was his first from a Power-5 program.

Clinton Township Chippewa Valley junior Marcel Lewis said his Cyclone recruitment picked up last month and culminated with an offer.

“Coach (D.K.) McDonald contacted me through Twitter and he started following me,” said Lewis. “He actually liked my film and it went from there. He said they really liked me and wanted me to be a part of something special. He got to know me a little bit more and talked to me. He really thought I could be one of the top linebackers in my class. A few weeks after that, he gave me an offer.”

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound linebacker’s instincts were one of the first things to stand out, he said.

“Coach McDonald likes the way I read plays and defenses,” Lewis said. “I do watch a lot of film and that kind of helps me in the defense.”

McDonald has also made quite an impression on Lewis for the job he’s done throughout the recruiting process.

“He’s a really good coach and gets to know his players,” Lewis said. “He wants to know about them and their families. He’s not just getting involved with you. “I haven’t even met he or any of the coaches yet, but they’re really nice to me and want to know me. That means a lot.”

Lewis said he’s taken notice of the season the Cyclones are having, especially on his side of the ball.

“I’m very impressed with what they’ve done this year,” he said. “It has been a big year for them. I also know they have a good Business school. I like financing and accounting. I know they would be a good fit for me academically. They’re really my top school and I want to go up there really soon for one of their junior days. It should be soon; I just need to get my dates set.”

In addition to I-State, Lewis has G5 offers from Kent State and Central Michigan, to go along with interest from Michigan State, Syracuse, Purdue and Cincinnati.
