Second Quarter:
Each offense punted once before the Panther defense came up with the biggest play of the game thus far for Mark Farley’s team. On 1st-and-10 from the ISU 15-yard line, UNI recovered a fumble on a dropped snap by Joel Lanning. D’Shawn Dexter came up with the recover at the 16-yard line and the Panthers had a short field.
Three plays after the timely fumble recovery it was Aaron Bailey hitting Tyvis Smith in the right corner of the end zone for a touchdown. Cyclone linebacker Willie Harvey nearly intercepted the pass, but it went for seven and tied the game with 9:14 left in the half.
Iowa State’s offense could only manage a three-and-out on the ensuing possession and the Panthers were right back on the field with Bailey at the controls. Luckily for the Cyclones, Brian Peavy forced a Bailey fumble on a 3rd-and-11 carry and Brian Mills recovered. ISU’s offense took over at the UNI 49-yard line.
Three plays later, Lanning connected with Hakeem Butler who made a one-handed catch in the back left corner of the end zone. It was the first catch of the redshirt freshman’s career and came with 3:20 left in the half. Cole Netten missed the PAT attempt and the Cyclones led 13-7.
UNI’s defense struck again later in the quarter when Karter Schult sacked Lanning in the end zone for a safety after the Cyclones were pinned deep at their own 11-yard line. The Panthers cut the deficit to 13-9 with 1:23 left in the half and the offense took back possession after the kick.
Northern Iowa took over at its own 39-yard line and Bailey immediately went to work on the defense, first connecting with Briley Moore for 19 yards on 2nd-and-10. A few plays later, he hit Smith for nine yards on a 4th-and-2 and the Panthers set up shop at the ISU 26.
Later on a 3rd-and-1, Bailey went up top to a receiver in the end zone and induced a pass interference penalty on Brian Peavy. With a 1st-and-goal at the 2-yard line, head coach Mark Farley elected to go for it and Bailey scrambled left into the end zone for a go-ahead touchdown. After the PAT, the Panthers took a 16-13 lead into the half. The drive was a killer for the Cyclone defense, as UNI went 61 yards in nine plays and needed just 1:16 to take the lead.
Advantage: Northern Iowa.
