First Quarter:
On the game’s first play from scrimmage, quarterback Sam Richardson connected with Dondre Daley for 31 yards to set the tone for a huge opening possession for the Cyclones. The drive even included a return of the Riverboat Gambler Paul Rhoads, who opted for a fake punt pass on 4th-and-2.
The trick play paid off as Holden Kramer lofted a 21-yard pass over the middle to Mitch Harger for a fresh set of downs. After an eight-yard carry from Mike Warren and seven-yarder by Joshua Thomas, it was the freshman Thomas who dove into the end zone for a touchdown. The Cyclones led 7-0 just 3:52 into the game.
It didn’t take long for the Horned Frogs to come up with an answer. KaVontae Turpin returned Cole Netten’s kickoff for 60 yards to set the offense up with first down at the Cyclone 38-yard line. Three plays into the drive, it was Trevone Boykin hooking up with Josh Doctson in the right corner of the end zone for the touchdown. TCU evened the score at 7-7 with 10:13 still left in the quarter.
Iowa State’s next possession ended in a Colin Downing punt and TCU took over at its own 18-yard line to open its second drive. The Horned Frogs scored again in quick fashion, going 82 yards in just eight plays and getting a Boykin 21-yard pass to Kolby Listenbee in the left corner of the end zone. I-State fell behind by a 14-7 margin with 6:38 left in the quarter.
With Joel Lanning under center for the first time on the evening, ISU needed just two plays to answer the Horned Frogs with a touchdown of its own. After a one-yard run by the quarterback, Lanning went up top to Allen Lazard for a 74-yard touchdown pass to even the score at 14-14 with 6:01 left in the quarter.
TCU was poised to tack on its third touchdown of the quarter when cornerback Nigel Tribune had other ideas. The Cyclone defensive back caused and recovered a fumble after Turpin rushed around the right side. ISU took over with a shot of momentum at its own nine-yard line and a tie game.
After Lanning heroics on the previous drive, Rhoads went back to Richardson for this drive and the senior responded by completing 4-of-4 passes for 78 yards. On the 10th play of the drive, it was Warren rushing four yards for the touchdown. I-State took a 21-14 lead with 1:49 remaining in the quarter.
Advantage: Iowa State.
