I watched the full game 7 of the 1968 World Series (Tigers at Cardinals) on YouTube over the past few days. Looks like the entire series is on YouTube. Thought some may enjoy the following tidbits:
  • Black & White telecast
  • Vintage ads are included in the broadcast
  • Announcers are Harry Carey (who was Cardinals announcer) and Curt Gowdy. Gowdy did first 4.5 innings, Carey the second 4.5 They would serve as the "color analyst" when the other was the PBP. The color analyst didn't say a lot...often only speaking when called on by the PBP guy.
    • Carey was pretty darn good...nice to see him before his "drunken Falstaff" days.
  • Tony Kubek was a roving reporter, but not much baseball-wise. Interviewed wives, etc.
    • Sidebar, Kubek now lives in Appleton, Wisconsin; helps out with Fox Valley Lutheran HS and its baseball team, claims he has not watched one MLB game since getting fed up with the game and leaving it back in 1994 (per Wikipedia)
  • Bob Gibson vs. Mickey Lolich. Mickey pitched on two days rest (and he pitched well in Game 7)
  • Daytime game
  • Crowd--many men in attendance dressed in ties. Quiet compared to today's standards.
  • Graphics very basic...and score rarely shown.
  • Busch Stadium was grass.
  • Last game for Roger Maris and Eddie Mathews
    • Cardinals went to Japan immediately after game for a series, neither Roger or Eddie went along.
    • The morning of the game, the players/team were spending time working on their passports, making sure all set for Japan, etc. Game 7, and they're working on their plans for Japan that morning.
  • Tigers won the game 4-1. Cardinals had two major baserunning blunders in 6th inning--two runners picked off.
  • Cardinal Curt Flood misjudged and stumbled on fly ball top 7th, two runs scored breaking 0-0 tie...that was basically it as Tigers added another run that inning.
  • Earlier in the series, Cardinals were up 3 games to 1, and led 3-0 in Game 5. All Tigers after that.
  • When something big happened, say for instance a player doubled, no celebration, no fist pump, no raising arms to the sky. Just got to the base and stood there.
In many ways, a better, refreshing game back then.
