Even playing Iowa, I thought the defense looked decent until the tail end of the game. They haven't been excellent so far this season, but I think they could win us some games if the offense can turn the field position and keep the ball for a while.
That's a positive sign. Our defense was atrocious last season and cost us numerous games. If this defense can at least remain competent, hopefully our offense will start to figure it out sooner rather than later and we can raise our overall level of play to one of being competitive in most or all of our Big 12 games.
Now, with that said, I think it is still too early to get a read on any of the teams. Iowa might win their division this year with their level of play. Or they might be absolutely terrible and that loss will be more than just a little disappointing by the end of the season. What is clearly more important than that game, is our next game.
I think Arkansas was overrated, so I don't put too much stock in Toledo beating them. Also, the WAY Toledo beat them might mean Toledo is salty and doesn't quit, but their close victory was inches away from being a blowout loss. Hopefully that isn't a sign of their talent and more of a sign of a simply terrible game by Arkansas. If that is the case, I think we can beat them in Toledo and should beat them there.
As I said, though, it is still too early to get a read on most teams in the country. I'll know a lot more about our team Sunday morning than I know about them now. A still relatively young defense has put up some pretty decent performances and our OLine looks like a bunch of new folks trying to figure out how to play the game. The defense could get better....and so could the offense.
