I think there is a misconception about the OLine. In the other thread we had a conversation about the "last 10 years", but that includes DMac's last season with Cotton as the OC when he was certainly on the hotseat and the transition to Chizik with McFarland happened right before the 2007 class was signed. Later, the 2009 class was a transition class to CPR with Herman, 2012 was signed with Mess at the helm and 2014 was signed after Mangino arrived...none of those people can solely be responsible for their first classes as they hadn't had any heavy influence over the OLine at that point.

What I did was take each athlete that was recruited out of HS to ISU that played OL for us and found their average pounds per inch of height. Not a perfect indicator of body type, but pretty good. I also included the athletes that were recruited as TE that moved to OLine.

By class:
2014 - 3.913 lbs/inch (Mangino[transition])
******2006 - 3.857 lbs/inch (Cotton)********sans Lamaak(TE)
2007 - 3.838 lbs/inch (McFarland[transition])
******2008 - 3.746 lbs/inch (McFarland)**********sans Bykowski(TE)
2006 - 3.734 lbs/inch (Cotton)
2015 - 3.686 lbs/inch (Mangino)
2012 - 3.643 lbs/inch (Messingham[transition])
2008 - 3.581 lbs/inch (McFarland)
2010 - 3.554 lbs/inch (Herman)
2013 - 3.312 lbs/inch (Messingham)
2011 - 3.297 lbs/inch (Herman)
2009 - 3.225 lbs/inch (Herman[transition])

Clearly, Herman had a philosophy of finding leaner bodies for the OLine. Messingham did better but didn't improve greatly...both were a far cry from recruiting the bulk that Cotton and McFarland liked and Mangino may even like more bulk than they did.

By athlete: Mangino recruits in italics and underlined / Herman and Mess recruits bolded.

The differences may be slight, but on the aggregate there appears to clearly be a difference in body composition...at least weight to height ratios.
