I sat down to watch last night's Coca Cola 600 at Charlottesville. I'm not a huge racing follower, but it was great how each car was honoring a veteran who died in service....and the whole aura of car racing at this iconic setting--on a beautiful evening--was Americana at its finest. So I decided to watch, even though I don't know half the drivers anymore.

What confused me was the use of "stages" to break up the race. I'd never seen that before. Is this done with all races now?

And just when I thought the race was over and that we had a winner...the race went into "overtime". Huh? What creates an overtime in a car race? I didn't understand this.

Still a fun race to watch with a lot of action and a surprise ending. Was fun to see winning owner Joe Gibbs giving his crew an inspirational pep talk after Hamlin won the race. You could see the old football coach side of him.
