A poster used to do these every year for Cy Hawk years ago. This is my first crack at it.
Twas the night before kickoff, in 2021:
The Cyclones were ready to prove they're the state's #1.
They did the final prep to Jack Trice's turf;
as tomorrow it would be the center of college football's universe.
A Top 10 matchup, the first of it's kind;
After last weekend's victory, Hawk fans were flying high;
The stage was set, College Gameday is in Ames;
The fans tomorrow surely won't be tamed.
The players were tucked all snug in their beds;
while visions of gameplans danced through their heads.
Brian Ferentz had nightmares of Heacock's schemes;
he knew this would be the best of Cyclone teams.
As Gameday came upon us on a hot Iowa morning;
the tailgaters arrived early and started pouring;
The lots from afar looked like a big red sea;
And Jamie Pollard was ready to show off the new facility.
The Gameday crew was amazed by the crowd;
and when Corso put on Cy's head they screamed out loud!
As it got closer to 11 o'clock, the Bear called the Cyclones a lock!
Herbstreit picked Iowa of course and was the loner, what a Big Ten homer!
Both teams took the field, the Hawks in their swarm;
They were the underdog today, could this be the new norm?
The Cyclones and Campbell took the field in all black;
The Hawk fans so pissed they about had a heart attack.
"Now Breece, Now Downing, Now Hutch and Purdy!
Lets take the ball and get the lead early!
On Eisworth, On McDonald, On Rose & Vance!
Get the ball into the endzone and do a touchdown dance.
"From the flip of the coin;
to the kick of the ball!
Now dash away! Dash away!
Dash away all!"
The Hawks kicked off and gave us first possession;
time to teach that "vaunted' Big 10 D a lesson.
Tom Manning had a game plan right out the gate;
Until we we had a long 3rd &8.
Purdy hits Milton for a pass just short of the sticks;
But Coach Campbell kept the offense on the field, is he feeling sick?
4th & 1, a play that's a bit of a gamble;
Breece hits the hole for an 11 yard ramble.
The Cyclones march to the redzone with a head full of steam;
and for the first scoring play Brock finds Kolar in the seam!
Offense strikes first in a big way;
hopefully this is foreshadowing the rest of the day.
Through the next possessions the offenses are stagnant,
and we're nearing halftime with a lead of 7-0.
But the Hawks get the ball and start clicking;
Tyler Goodson breaks one free to our 20 as the clock is still ticking.
Petras hurries the offense down the field;
but not to worry a field goal is all they would yield.
7-3 is the halftime score in this defensive battle,
time to make some adjustments and get back on the saddle.
The 2nd half begins with a kickoff to Charlie Jones;
But a Rory Walling hit rattles his bones.
Petras hits Tracy on a long tipped pass;
and the Cyclones in the stands let out a gasp.
"Touchdown Iowa" Gary Dolphin proclaims;
as Tavern Hawks everywhere yell "we run Ames."
Not so fast buddy boy, counting on the offense to stay cold,
these are not your Cyclones of old!
The offense strikes back quickly with a long touchdown run by Hall,
as he screams into the TV cameras "It's a Cyclone State, ya'll,"
The coaches huddle the team to keep their emotions in check,
there's still a quarter left to play last time I checked!
The offenses trade possesions back and forth without much threat,
but the Hawks will get a chance to take the lead once again.
Petras drops back and starts to scramble, the pass is flung;
When John Walters screams "It's picked off by ISHEEM YOUNG!!"
The game is in the bag, and the Cyclones win closely,
as the players run over to secure the Cy-Hawk Trophy.
14-10 as the scoreboard reads final, it leaves no debate;
IT'S A CYCLONE STATE!
