BASKETBALL Women: Carlton is Big 12 Player-of-Year

Iowa State women's basketball senior Bridget Carleton was named the Big 12 Player of the Year, becoming the first Cyclone to earn the prestigious honor, awarded by the league's coaches. Sophomore Kristin Scott, redshirt senior Alexa Middleton and freshman Ashley Joens were also honored by the Big 12.

Carleton was utterly unstoppable in Big 12 action, averaging 20 points or more against every league opponent. In league play, she stuffed the stat sheet like nobody else averaging a Big 12 leading-24.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.2 blocks. The Chatham, Ontario, Canada native also led Iowa State to a 13 wins in Big 12 action, which is tied for the most in school history. The Cyclones are currently ranked 19th in the AP Poll and 14th in the latest NCAA Reveal.

The Big 12's top player also claimed a league-high six Player of the Week awards in 2018-19, while no other player had more than two. Carleton was also one of five unanimous selections to the All-Big 12 First Team.

Scott earned second-team All-Big 12 honors after a breakout season. The Kasson, Minn., native, averaged 15.2 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game. Her field-goal percentage of 57.9 percent from the floor ranks second in the Big 12. She reached double figures in 16 games in Big 12 action and, and had five double-figure rebounding games. She also put together a perfect 11-of-11 performance for 31 points at Oklahoma State, while seven of her shots were 3-pointers.

Alexa Middleton was named honorable mention All-Big 12 after leading the Cyclones at point. Middleton averaged 9.4 points, 4.8 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game. She reached double figures in 11 Big 12 games and dished five or more assists in 11 games. The Murfreesboro, Tenn., native also recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 assists on the road at Oklahoma State.

Joens was named to the All-Freshman Team. The Iowa City, Iowa native finished second among freshmen in scoring in league games, averaging 12.1 points per game. She was also third in rebounding, with 5.1 boards per game. Joens also finished fourth in the Big 12 conference in 3-pointers made in the regular season, knocking down 66.
