I was reading the Register this morning about the supervisors in Madison County effectively shutting down further development of wind turbines in the county. Wind turbines are one of those technologies that help free us from fossil fuels, but dot the landscape with what many consider an eyesore. They have been criticized as detrimental to birds, they make noise for those that live nearby and may not be economically viable without government support. There is also a big issue regarding the disposal of retired turbines.
I don't know how much of the criticisms are valid or what the real economics are. It has been years since I've paid much attention to this industry, so I don't really know what the truth is about turbines. With so many farmers on this board some may have turbines on that land or have been approached about it. That would be an interesting perspective us city dwellers don't often hear.
So without getting too political, what do people think about wind energy and the turbines that have become so common in Iowa? Are you for or against them, or somewhere in between?
